Going back to school @ 26

Published

Hi- I am interested in perusing a 2nd bachelors degree in nursing. I'm hesitant/scared and unsure of the process. I currently work full-time for a company but I am not happy. I've always thought about nursing but never did anything about it. Does anyone have any tips/advice? I think my biggest concern is that I am too late.

You're only 26. You still have plenty of time if you decide to pursue nursing.

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.

You're still young!

I agree. Take your time and think about it. There are accelerated programs that can get you your BSN in as little as 18-24 months. My neighbor got her ADN at 40 after her kids grew up. So there's definitely time!

I think my biggest concern is that I am too late.

Why would you think you are "too late"? Schools don't have age caps.

I remember looking at nursing prerequisites at around age 28 and thinking......this will take FOREVER......I will be so old to start a career. Over 3/4 of my classmates were my age or older.

Looking back, at age 64, it went by so fast, and 26 is so young!

you're too old to start a career as a prima ballerina lol but not too old to become a nurse!

Specializes in Clinical Research, Outpt Women's Health.

I did it at age 27. Go for it IF it doesn't require going into huge debt.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Over the years the average age of new grad RNs has increased to 31 years old. You are not too late. Nursing is unlike other college majors because it is flooded with people who graduated at a nontraditional age.

That's exactly what I did.

One of the awesome things about going back to nursing school is that there will almost certainly be other adult learners in your class. My class of 60 (all second-degree accelerated students) included engineers, execs, and a couple of PhDs. Our teachers knew that it wasn't our first rodeo, and tailored the classes to meet our needs.

I don't regret the career change for a second. Nursing is truly the most versatile profession out there.

My close friends in nursing school have grandkids! No kidding!

Specializes in ER.

My sister is 29, has 2 school aged kids and has just gone back to school to persue a bachelors in nursing.

With your dreams it's never too late. Besides would you rather be bothered about being too late or never trying at all?
