Evil New Nurse

okay lets begin from the very begining... I work on a 31 patient med/surg unit and about 8 months ago my manager hired a brand spanking new RN. Now she did her orientation and slowly we (as in EVERYONE) realized she tends to be harsh with her words and rarely helps us (the techs) with care. Just the other day I had 30 patients and she was the only RN who did not help me care for her own patients.

She constantly argues and questions the RN's who orientated her which in my opinion are some of the smartest and dedicated people I have ever met.

She yelled at me when I tried to help someone how to use the new computer system put in place by the IT department because i was not "letting her learn on her own."

She will go out of her way to be Charge Nurse to avoid the Narcotics count and apparently does not know how to use gloves... She put on a colostomy with NO GLOVES!!!!!!!

She just treats all of us very badly even if we have been there ages longer than she has. She does not respect us and believes she knows everything..

One day i just want to catch her in the clean utility room and explain to her that even if you are a nurse for twenty years there is always something new to learn and you cannot think of yourself as knowing everything when you just graduated eight months ago....

On a happier note I got my acceptance letter to Nursing School lol

I have been in the same situation with people like you are describing. They come in all forms, CNA, dietary, housekeeping, not just nurses.

I've learned in those many years, no amount of talking will change that persons attitude or superior opinion of themselves. And then I wait for the inevidable to happen, one day that person will need you (or someone else they've been rude or condescending to) for a favor. The techs are the nurses eyes and ears :) And guess what, what they gave is what they will sooner or later get! I truely believe in Karma.

I try to take every experience as a learning experience. Even the bad experiences can teach you something. From this persons flippant attitude and careless ways of nursing have just taught you what kind of person and nurse YOU don't want to be..right *wink*.

Maybe you should take her aside and calmly, without accusatory tone, let her know how it is you and others perceive her and ask if that is how she wants to known by her peers.

"Constant arguing", "treats all of us badly" and "yelling" is unacceptable. If she truly "yelled" at you and is treating you badly, then you need to be more assertive and nip that in the budd. By that I mean confronting her about it each and every time she does it to you (let others fight their own battles) and if that doesn't work after a few times, bump it up the chain of command. "Yelling" is unprofessional behavior.

Ewww...perhaps that should be reported to the charge nurse. That is an infection control issue.
