Class of 2015

I am actually ready to start the next quarter. Cooommmme on Jan 7th!!

I feel like I'm digging my heels in trying to keep time from passing. Seriously, don't make me go back! I am sadly not one of those people who loves nursing school.

Thought I'd drop in and say hi. I feel like I finally have a moment to post! I start my 3rd quarter on the 7th, and we graduate Spring of 2015. Hope everyone has enjoyed their break!

I'm eager to get the ball rolling.

I'm so ready to finally start nursing school! I start my BSN program on the 6th and I'll graduate in August of 2015. Our orientation is the first day of school. We're getting our pics taken for our ID and we're getting our free littmann's and penlight. I can't wait! My bag is already packed :)

How does repeat courses work in the program?

All schools are different. From my nursing school's handbook...

A student who fails a nursing course (as indicated by a grade of “D” or “F”) must repeat both the theory and clinical components of that course. A student in the prelicensure BSN program who fails a nursing course (grade of D or F) may repeat the course once. Re-enrollment is contingent on space availability. Prior to re-enrolling in the course that must be repeated, the student must schedule an appointment with the Retention Coordinator in the School of Nursing.The purpose of this meeting is to assist the student in developing a plan of action designed to facilitate success in the course and the nursing program. Failure to schedule and attend this meeting prohibits the student from re-enrolling in the course that needs to be repeated. All degree requirements for the BSN program must be completed within 5 years from the date ofadmission to the program.

Five years? That leaves you just enough time to fail every semester once.

This second semester is already busy. It is a relief to feel like I know what I'm doing, at least in the sense that I am not a deer in headlights wondering what nursing school will be like. Also, I'm starting this semester knowing how to study, unlike last semester when it took me quite a few attempts to figure out how to be successful. I was thinking mental health would be dry and uninteresting, but I think it might end up being my favorite class and clinical. We'll see. How is everyone else?

We had a skills check off this morning before clinicals starts but all we had to demonstrate as Foley catheter insertion and IV insertion. I did well on the catheterization part, but man I suck at IVs. It wasn't even finding a vein on the mannequin. I couldn't figure out how to advance the catheter without pushing the needle for some reason. It was pretty embarrassing.

Are you using otc needles? if so it's simple. If you hold the needle with your thumb and middle finger on the sides, there's a tab at the top of the cannula that you can use your index finger to drive forward as you retract the needle at the same time. Depending on the type of needle it is, you may needle to hold tamponade on the vein to keep from "bloodletting" haha. You'll get the hang of it. Even vets have a hard time with them
