Changed my mind

Published

I just wanted to say that before I read the chats on this site, I was very interested in pursuing my masters to become an NP. However, knowing I would have to work as a RN for a few years which recently proposed a huge problem for me. Alot of RN's seem so negative, gossip seems to be the mainstream, and quite frankly, alot of you seem as though you hate your job. Thanks for the reality check. I know many of you are excellent nurses, which the world can respect. Although it seems that too many are pessimistic and indecisive... that's just not the type of environment I want to be in.

There is nothing like a perfectly passive-aggressive post. :p

Why dont you just goto PA school if your so worried about having to be an RN before an NP? Im not sure Id want an NP working on me that had no field experience.

I'm not sure what you have your Bachelor's in but you may want to take a look around at a few more schools. I know in my area there are a number of Master's Programs (NP/PA) that do not require a BSN, ASN, Diploma or previous nursing experience to get in.

Personally, I will not let anything I read on a BB change my mind about my career. I've made up my mind that I will try to be the best d@%n nurse I can and do everything in my power not to do the negative things you hear about.

Also, do you notice that all you every hear about anything in the world, the negative. I guess most good days wouldn't make for good stories, not in the news not in anything. But, this is my feeling towards nursing! If you are letting this BB change your mind, then I have a feeling nursing wasn't really in your blood to begin with.

I hope you find a good fit for you, good luck in all you do, also, look into colleen idea.

Heres a reality check.....It does not matter where you work or type of field you are in...There will always be what you described above. Just because YOU have insecurities about the career path you are contemplating, doesn't give you the right to put down a noble calling.

There are ALOT of people in this world who HATE their jobs.....dont let others discourage you.....

good luck on whatever you decide

Good luck to you. Better to figure this out before spending all the time and money.

But if your goal was to be a NP, I'd suggest at least looking into a couple of PA programs and talking with a couple of PAs. That is a roughly equivalent license that does NOT require working as an RN along the way.

what sjoe said---just want to add:

Just remember a lot of times we use boards like this for

"blowing off steam"......it is appropriate and healthy...rather than going "postal" at our work places. Remember this also, this is NOT an all-professiona behavior-controlled environment where we are all Stepford folks who just LOVE our jobs 24/7. Best face the reality of HMO/PPO profit-driven medicine/nursing. Really, either way you go, frustrations will meet you some how. Hope you can deal with them w/o getting all mad and giving up too easily and in a huff.

Best wishes, whatever path you choose.

ya know i am trying really hard not to get mad because this person is stereotyping all nurses based on what it said on an internet forum.....

ill tell you something there are easier ways to make good money than nursing so if someone is a nurse they usually love what they do. not everything here is complaining...i see so many other posts with jokes and funny stories from work, picking on docs.....

this board is actually very positive if you ask me :) :nurse:

I agree with you shellsie - this board is actually a very positive place. It gives us a place to vent and find support when our jobs get us down and often serves to remind us why we keep going back.

My advice - Don't feed the trolls!

Well, I have been working as an RN for nearly 41 years , in many areas , from ICU, to CC, and A&E, then with the Flying Doctor Service for 21 years , and now I am back in a " civilised " hospital! and loving every minute !

Admittedly, I am in OZ, but a Nurse is a Nurse , I would not ever consider doing anything else !

I do believe that Nurses are " born" , if it worries you , don't do it ! It would not suit you

You know I have had several different jobs in the last 20 years and have found that ANYWHERE one works...the same BS happens..gossip, negativity...BS..doesn't matter what field..retail, sales, healthcare, insurance, teaching. SO good luck in finding an area that you will NOT find any of what is discouraging you from pursuing what was once your big interest. It seems that you haven't checked this board out enoguh to find all the positive and supportive nurses and posts. Keep searching..you'll find loads of them!! Good Luck in your search!:)
