Anyone sick of working weekends????

Nurses General Nursing

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone else is sick of working weekends??? I know I should have thought of that before I got into nursing...but you know...I didn't. Anyways...I'm tired of all my friends and family having the weekends off and doing things without me because I'm working..it sucks. I'm actually trying to break into the telephone triage or case management scene....to avoid the weekend thing. I'm really wanting to get into to a "non bedside" setting. Anyone know of a case management job in northwest wisconsin..LOL. I don't know ...I'm just sick of all of this...I've even been looking into different career options with "NO" weekends...yeah..I ..know..I'm sounding pretty sad and desperate now.....but to me, spending time with my husband, family, and friends is very important to me...and right now..that's not happening...and I hate it. I'm not really into the whole clinic scene..I just don't know what to do. If anyone has been following my posts in the recent past...I've actually thought a lot about going back to school for vet. tech. I loveeeeeeee animals and could totally see myself working in a sweet little 8 to 5 vet. clinic...unfortunately...I've heard the pay pretty much sucks...how can I go from a 24 dollar an hour job down to a 12 dollar a hour job...hmmmmm. Well..thanks for listening everyone...even though I rambled like crazy....just wanting to vent a little..if anyone has any words of wisdom for me...feel free to let me know...k?

Thanks :D

It didn't used to bother me, it does now. At some jobs I had to work 3 weekends on, 1 off; most recently it was every other weekend.

It bothers me now.

I now work agency and don't work weekends or holidays.

I don't like it either, but accept that I have to do it unless I can eventually go to casual status and only have to work 2 weekend shifts/month as a commitment (Friday, Saturday or Sunday). Do you have to work full-time? Also, the 12-hour shift nurses only have to work every 3rd weekend at our hospital. Is that a possiblity for you?

weekends don't bother me as long as they are set, like every other weekend. It is whenever they tell you that and you end up working every weekend. That pretty much sucks.

RN-PA,

I was doing the every third weekend (12 hour shifts) but I have endometriosis and have a lot of pain from it and the 12 hour shifts just got way too long for me. Now..I will be going back to every other weekend...not that I want to...but because I need to because my body wont let me do the 12's. I'm starting to wonder if it's more of a "I'm not satisfied with my career" thing versus a weekend thing...I just don't know. I love my husband dearly...but he didn't go to college...started his current job right out of high school..has bankers hours and no weekends...it really isn't fair...we go to college, study, sweat, stress, etc.....for what...to get crappy hours...hummmmm. I just don't know what to do..>I feel like I'm having a mid life crisis and I'm only 26 years old....HELP

Guess I am used to them. I plan events on my weekends off. If I am not able to , then I try to switch with one of my coworkers. I too would love to change into case management. But, no jobs here.

It doesn't bother me. I miss out on some things that my friends are doing. I work every other weekend. But it's also nice having days off during the week. I find it hard to believe you didn't consider working weekends when you got into nursing. Silly thing. :)

Good luck in finding something you're happy with.

Most facilities are short staffed which means weekend work. My suggestion is to increase your education level and get a clinic position.

That was my real goal when I got my BSN was to get a M-F job because weekends stink.

i work 3 out of 4 weekends a month...... its horrible i am married and have 3 young boys too. But to be honest since leaving school, many moons ago...lol, every job i had i have had to work weekends! I do think 3 out of 4 weekends is alot. Some nurses on our ward get away with working 1 weekend a month . I have complained and i think weekend work should be fairly shared out. The hospital policy we have has 'family friendly hours' but i dont think they understand this....lol. I will have to go and expplain to them...hehehehe

Go to this

website:http://www.rncasemanager.com/job_search.asp

This will take you to their jobsite page. If you don't see anything, don't give up! Update your resume and post it on one of the major websites. It will take a little perserverence, but if you are as determined to get off working weekends (as I was), you'll find something.

Good luck!:)

3rdShiftGuy, I'm sure glad you put a smiley face there.

weekends are my bread-and-butter.

they allow me to be home with the kids during the week to school them.

i can see myself being sick of this one day...however.

since I work EVERY Friday and some Saturdays......it can get old. but then I remember why I work weekends....

extra$$$ for the family while not paying extra$$$ for daycare.

so, for me, it works out.
