i start on a med/surg floor at the local hospital monday morning and will switch to noc after orientation.

my thanks to everyone at allnurses.com for your assistance during the difficult ns days. now, i wonder which bridge program to try to get into.....?

Thanks all. Yes it IS a good feeling; achieving my lifelong goal of becoming a nurse. It took a looooong time to get here, but I finally have.

I'm sure that good feeling will disappear by 8am Monday morning. :uhoh3:

Congrats!!!-To the Thread Starter.

I am a pre-nursing student and am going for my BSN. Can you tell me the new experiences that you had when you officially started on the floor?

I wish you all much success!! Remember to keep a spiritual foundation, because even though we should all have one anyway. It is very important to have one dealing with the lives of others. God has given each and every nurse and doctor the gift to aid in healing. So make sure to ask God to annoit your hands as you use them for His will.

Smile..God Loves you!!

Thank you very much!

I'll post again after my first few days on the floor and let you know. However, I don't think my experience will be typical of most new grads - I'll share why.

First, I am not new to this field; just new as a nurse. I was a military medic, civilian paramedic, and I have worked for the past year at an urgent care as an MA. I know the hospital well, and did most of my clinicals there (ER, step-down, low-acuity m/s, L&D, rehab, etc) and know about a third of the staff very well. I am already familiar/comfortable with their charting and e-mar systems. After graduation, I submitted my resume directly to the DON - the next day I got a call from my new NM (whom I had never met before) and her comment was basically "OK.... you're hired. When can you start and when do you take your NCLEX?" Turns out that most of the nurses I know and those that I have had dealings with before, called my NM to recommend me..... :imbar

My new grad orientation has no set time or format; I'll be paired with a preceptor and will be cut lose as soon as I, the preceptor, and the NM feels comfortable with it. I know I need p&p, "the routine", and some skills that I have never done or it has been a decade plus since doing them.

My point of all this is that I don't believe that I'll suffer the "culture shock" most new grads experience: I have experience dealing w/ patients, I know this facility pretty well, and my skills are pretty good. I'm certain that I still have much to learn, but I am approaching my immediate future with confidence instead of trepidation.

The Lord guides my every step, and I am living proof of His beneficence. Good luck in school!
