PLU students, any advice, suggestions, etc? What is the program like?

Congratulations! I'm currently a student at PLU and I really like the nursing program. Some of the instructors are amazing and I feel like they have my best interest at heart. You will get a ton of clinical time and even though it can be quite overwhelming at times at the end of each semester you'll be able to look back and see how much you've accomplished. I wish you well and welcome you to the Lutes!

Hey, I am a student at PLU too and received my spring notification around a month ago. I requested spring because I don't want to cram my schedule and the army is paying for the extra semester anyways :p. Did you all choose spring or get placed in it?

I started Spring of 2008. I was a transfer student from a community college and was placed in the Spring cohort. It gave me about six months off before starting nursing school and I really tried to utilize that time to get some things done that I knew I wouldn't have time for when I started back up. In your first semester you only have one nursing class - it allows you to finish up any remaining pre-requisite classes and to get your required religion class in. Nursing 220, your first class, is a good way to get your feet wet and really determine if nursing is what you want to do. I'm halfway done with the program and I'm really glad I chose to go to PLU - Welcome jgcadet!

Thanks! Ya I am using the first semester to finish my co-reqs (i.e. Psych 320 and Microbiology). I am really pumped to start nursing school. Although it is primary a female profession, I know the male sector is growing and I am happy to be a part of it.

If you are starting in the Spring and you plan on taking Micro at the same time - make sure it is being offered! I think we had three or four people in my class who had to take it at a community college over the summer because it wasn't available during the Spring semester. They may have changed the schedule but I would make sure before you count on taking it at PLU and then have to scramble to get in somewhere else. You have to have Micro before you start Pathophysiology in your second semester. Is it an option for you to take it this Fall at PLU? If so, I'd take it and get it over with!

I was placed in the spring semester also. I will be happy to have a break from school before having to start up full time. I need to retake stats, because I didn't get a 3.0 :( and I think I have a few odd general classes to take... I think I am missing a PE class or something? :p

What is the Nursing Competencies class like? What do you do in it?

You start with the very basics in Nursing Competencies - like learning how to wash your hands. The class is a combination of lecture, lab, and clinical. I will tell you that the hardest part of 220 is learning how to take the lecture tests. You will have to change the way you think about test taking for nursing school. Tests are geared to prepare you for the NCLEX exam and as such, your first semester can be tough learning how to study for them. You will come across a question that looks somewhat familiar but you know that the answer selections given weren't in your book or the lecture. This is where the critical thinking skills come into play. If you read some of the threads on the Nursing Student section of this site you will see that it is a major adjustment for a lot of nursing students. Just realize that everything builds on your previous knowledge and experiences. The critical thinking gets easier as you progress in the program.

The first half of the semester you spend in the lab learning the basics of patient care, like how to bathe and feed a patient. It may seem like simple stuff but take it seriously, it won't be quite as stressful when you actually have to do it in clinical on a real person. Clinical is the second half of the semester and when you're done you can take the test to become a CNA if you're not already licensed.

You only have the one nursing class your first semester so it isn't too overwhelming, but be prepared - you will probably still have some anxious moments!

Good to know, thanks so much! :) I have gotten some on the job training and I'm in the process of becoming a licensed HCA (Healthcare Asst.), was thinking of getting my MA license too, once I take pharmacology, so I can give injections at work. (I'm planning to work during school breaks if I can).

I am just so relieved to know I'm finally in a program! :)

It's getting close to go time! Finalizing my financial aid, getting my health requirents packet submitted, registration. So exciting! :)
