Admitted George Washington ABSN Fall 2014

U.S.A. Washington DC

Hello!! I just got my acceptance letter last week and I am soooo excited!!! I will be moving to Ashburn from Portland, OR. I am wondering if anyone has any housing plans or tips? The DC area is crazy expensive....I am just curious about future housing plans and/or best areas to live that are close to classes??

Gkarlholm - I just messaged you too.

Gkarlholm - yay congrats!! I am thinking of living close to the Ashburn campus and then commuting to clinicals...because it's my understanding that we won't figure out where our clinical sites are until later. Will you be visiting the area anytime before school starts? I am trying to get in on housing with others too!! And we can all explore all of the hiking and biking with all of our free time..hahaha...

I'm currently a DC resident and probably going to stay in DC if I attend GW. while being closer to campus would be nice, there don't seem to be many benefits to living in Ashburn when we can't predict where clinicals will be. Going to the luncheon 2 Fridays from now to check out the campus, anyone else?

I'll be there! I'm a DC resident too. We started a FB page under the name "GW ABSN Class of 2015 Fall Entry" for easier communication.

I tried to search for the FB page with no luck. Would you mind posting a link?

I can't make the luncheon...maybe we can all schedule a happy hour sometime in June?? :)

Hey guys, as always, I'm here for any questions you have about the program (I'm graduating in 26 days :)) Feel free to message me!

Hey Mindy! I just sent a quick question about days on campus vs clinicals. Trying to decide if I should live in VA during the first part of the program instead of DC. You are the best! Thanks!

Well, I live in Leesburg, about 15ish minutes from school. Most of my clinicals were out towards DC (Alexandria, Fairfax, DC) and two were here in Loudoun + my preceptorship was in Loudoun. It really is a trade off. They "try" to match you to nearby to where you live, but realistically, most of the hospitals are out in that direction, so I guess keep that in mind. The first couple semesters it's tricky, because lab starts at 8:00am, so getting from DC to campus is tough, but I'm happy to be so close to school. Ultimately, we're probably going to have to move towards DC because that's where all the jobs are, so I guess that's something to consider, too. INOVA Loudoun, Haymarket, and some of the big hospitals in MD are the only ones that are close by to this area, but you have WHC, VHC, RHC, the other INOVAs, Children's, Sibley, GWU, etc all out that way (but then again that's also about a year and a half away). Honestly, it's weighing the pros and cons.

We have a pretty huge apartment in Leesburg that we split with another couple and we save a lot of $$ monthly compared with what we could have gotten in Arlington for the same price. My friend is also doing an apartment share... I think her 2-bedroom apartment, which is 800 square feet is $2100/month and our 1100 square foot apartment in Leesburg is $1450/month. I'd rather pay less and commute a little bit more to know I'll have money put aside each month to pay off my loans and not be close to DC (and honestly once the metro is finished it'll be less of a hassle to get to DC if you need to). But again, we'll probably move a little bit closer (not quite Arlington, maybe Sterling/Reston) and we'll still be able to get a decent-sized apartment for a lot less than in Arlington/DC. It depends on what you want and what is important to you. I moved here from NY and didn't really care about being close to the city... I know a ton of people HAD to be close to DC and spent the extra to be closer, but it just wasn't important to us. So... I don't know if that helped you at all, but good luck with whatever you choose :)

Wow- thank you! How many days/week did you have to be on the Ashburn campus during the first and second semester?

The first semester, three days, + one clinical day, and one day off. I'm pretty sure this was the case for the second semester, as well. Summer was when it slowed down a little bit... we were on campus once, but had different clinicals (psych, community) and some were on the weekends.
