wanting to move south

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hi,

I am a going to be entering my 4th year of my BScN program in the fall and am beginning to think of the future. I am a Nursing student who goes to St. francis Xavier Universtiy in Nova Scotia Canada. I would really love to work in Virgina as I hear it is a beautiful state. Can anyone recommend a nice area of the state for a young 22 year old to work in? I am wanting good experience and a friendly atmosphere. Also like a lot of young Canadian nurses I want good pay. I would preferably like to live in a area that is either near water or not a far drive from the ocean.

If there are any Canadian nurses who would be willing to talk with me a couple of time through e-mail, I would love to know how one gets started with the process of finding a job, work visas and moving down to Virgina.

Hoping for a reply,

Thanks a lot!

If you want the water ... then I would suggest the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area. There is plenty of water around ... lots of beaches ... lots of cultural events ... lots of things to do ... many nice hospitals to choose from. The pay is not as high as some areas, but the cost of living is not as high either.

The mountains are an easy 3 hours drive away. The Virginia and North Carolina beaches are local.

I totally agree (not just b/c its where I live!)...this area has a lot to offer and is growing... I moved down here 9 years ago from NYC and have never really considered leaving. If you want to live in a rural area you can or if you prefer to live in a more urban area its here too! As mentioned, the beaches are local! (45 minutes or less!)

Sentara is the largest healthcare provider...they even have a page on their site for Canadian nurses... http://www.sentara.com/nursing/canadian_RNs.htm

If you're interested in pediatrics, Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters is where to go http://www.chkd.com

also Bon Secours is a rather large employer: http://bonsecourshamptonroads.com/employment/

There is also Chesapeake General Hospital and Obici Hospital in Suffolk...

if you like the ocean, virginia beach is nice and you are near the ocean and the mountains aren't to far. good luck
