NVCC Class of 2013 Meet and Greet + Q&A

Hello All,

I wanted to start a new thread for everyone who was accepted (and because the other one was getting really long). :) If you could please share some information about yourself and any questions you have about the program, that'd be great!

Name: Carolyn

Years at NVCC: 1

Joined the FBook Group: Yes

Track: Traditional

Career Goal: CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist)

Planning to Transfer: Yes (Mason, BSN Program)

Classes Completed: SDV 101, BIO 141, 142, 205, CHM 111, CST 229, ITE 115, HLT 141 + AP Credit in BIO, ENG, and PSY.

About me: I know I've always wanted to work in healthcare but when I started volunteering as an EMT, I knew that I wanted to be a nurse. My senior year I applied to UVa and was not accepted and decided to go to NVCC because they have a well spoken about nursing program, and I could work to make money while I was at school. I plan to earn my RN through NVCC, then transfer to Mason and earn my BSN. I'm excited and overwhelmed but I have great confidence that our class will make it through together!

Questions:

- Is anyone else dreading buying the NUR 111 book? It's 520 dollars....

- Does anyone living near campus need a roommate/also looking to move closer to Springfield for the year? The drive for me is 70+ minutes.

- Do we need to buy our own scrubs? Any limitations on colors/prints/style? What color do our shoes have to be?

Classes Completed: pre-reqs of course. I have a BA in Historic Preservation already so all the "make me a better human being" classes are done.

About me: I'm married with a 2yo. I have had nearly every type of job you can think of. Just off the top of my head are machinist, Marine, firefighter, archaeologist, and now ER tech. Those are just the paying jobs I can think of right now. I'm a national registry medic. I volunteer at Loudoun County Rescue Squad in Leesburg. I work for inova at Loudoun hospital in the ed as a tech. I'm old. I turn 39 this year. My wife is a volunteer medic in Leesburg at the rescue squad. I'll happily show you pictures of her or my daughter if you have time to kill.

Questions:

There seem to be a few folks from Loudoun in our class. We should try and set up a carpool. Anyone interested?

Comments:

1) Don't skimp on the stethoscope. I've been lusting after my wife's Master Cardiology ever since I bought it for her. So being a wonderful wife she bought me one for this program. I swear you can hear atoms collide with it. Having run ems for many years I can say you'll never go wrong buying good quality. Allheart.com has them cheaper than standris.

2) I'm hoping to use the nvcc scrubs as a color match for buying better ones. I wear scrubs for work in the ER. The nvcc scrubs are $12. I can say you get what you pay for with $12 scrubs.

3) If you haven't signed up for a CPR class yet email me. I happen to know a CPR instructor. She's asleep next to me right now.

Hi Dave! You're right... I think Carolyn found 5 people (including myself) in our class that live in Loudoun. You make 6. A carpool is definitely the way to go. I guess when it gets closer, we can figure out the details, and who's interested in doing that. I know I am!

I'm on board with the steth too... I have my eye on a master cardiology too. The only thing is I had someone GIVE me a steth and blood pressure cuff (I think it was an Allheart) which was SO nice... So now I'm having difficulty paying that much money when I technically have one...

I already tried with the uniform thing too! I'm on the tall side and pretty thin, so finding anything that fits is difficult. Something tells me unisex pants are not going to work, but Mrs. Vito says they MUST come from the same dye lot and be purchased through MEC. No workaround like there may have been in the past.

Hi Dave,

I haven't signed up for the CPR class yet, but does your wife teach the AHA Healthcare Provider BLS/AED course? If so, how much? I know, dumb question, but I'm trying to save $$ like many of our fellow classmates, even with the textbooks, which are an outrageous dollar amount! I don't work at the moment, so every penny counts. :D

I'll have to check with her but I believe all she asks is you to make a donation to the rescue squad for the use of the training room and materials. We have loaner books and you watch the dvd in class. The only time I've ever opened an AHA book was for ACLS and PALS. Let me talk to her and see if we can set up a night at the station.

Check your school email, I sent out a message to everyone. I've found 5 or 6 people that live in Loudoun. There are definitely carpool options for you :) Send me a email and I'll hook you up.

As far as I know, Dave's trying to get one organized soon, but if it doesn't fall through, we could check with our local rescue station (or other AHA-approved/certified organization) to see when they offer the class. I haven't heard back from him yet. Also, Dave said that the AHA will mail the cards to us once they receive our written test and skills portion.
