Advisor Issues

Does anyone else have issue with their advisor being super slow to respond to requests for help? My course map gives me credit for Tech Writing so I have been attempting to register for Nursing A&B. However, the system will not let me me w/out including the Tech Writing go-along. I have been emailing my advisor, but except for on brief response reminding me to include my student id number, I have not gotten any resolution or further response. I am getting frustrated.

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing problems with your advisor. My enrollment specialist has been speedy in her response, usually within 3 minutes of my emails and always answers the phone. She has been a tremendous amount of help to get me ready for the August start date. My nursing advisor is awesome, just pure awesome. You are assigned advisors based on your last name. Check their website online to ensure that you are emailing the correct advisor.

Hi Pacutwo,

My advisor has been horrible, too. Maybe we have the same one, I don't know. Never answers the phone, although I can sort of see that, but never once has called me back. I have e:mailed many times regarding several things so far and response time is sketchy. Once, it took 4 days for a response back. I had the same problem you had when I tried to register and couldn't. I e:mailed my advisor and put something like "need help registering" in the Subject Line and that seemed to get the advisor's attention. A friend of mine has a really great advisor who is very responsive, so it looks like it is hit or miss.

So to follow up...I get that automated phone call saying I need to pay my tuition and I am a little confused because my next class is to start in Oct because I need a wee break for vacay, connect care classes and certification seminars. Therefore, I know my tuition is not due yet. I check my email and find my advisor has finally checked hers and registered me for Nurs 3645 to start next week. Nope. I clearly requested October in every email. I tried to swap it in MyMav and it was a no-go. My only choice was to drop and email her again and explain because I can't risk that she will not correct it by this evening. Arg. I used to have a different advisor. She was better. Then they switched up. Thanks for the the info on switching, because if it doesn't improve I may have to do that.

PacuTwo,

Your situation sounds frustrating. I think you did the right thing by dropping because the class starts in 3 days and the tuition is due today, I believe. Can't understand why some of these advisors aren't capable of actually reading and understanding simple info in e:mails. In all the correspondences I had w/ mine, I don't believe there was ever a time when we were on the same track regarding a problem

or issue. I hope you get things worked out. You can ALWAYS come here to vent w/ those of us who can really feel your pain.

Specializes in ICU.

I've had two advisors. The first one was ok. She would get back to me withing a day or two. Seemed a bit slow to me but it was workable.

The second and current one is pretty good. He is efficient, actually reads what I asked, and responds to all questions asked not just the last one.

I've never wanted to call one of them so I have no idea how available they are by phone. My impressions is that since this is an online course, email is the preferred communication mode.

Give your advisor time to respond. If you don't get a response in maybe 2 days, you could always email another advisor. There is a list of them and even though one is assigned to you based on your last name, any of them would probably try to help you or at least send a "hey why aren't you responding to your students" email to the tardy advisor.

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.

At first my advisor was horrible at getting back to me...I wouldn't hear from her for weeks. It got to the point that I would start contacting the office administrator for assistance. I was on the verge of switching advisors...she was a great advisor when she did respond, but it was incredibly frustrating.

But whatever problems she had had, they apparently are over with: now I'll get a response from her the next day or the day after the latest.
