tech position questions

U.S.A. Texas

Hi...I would like to talk to anyone who works as a tech in NICU/L&D (or really any area) at any of the major hospitals in the DFW area (Children's, Parkland, JPS, THR, or Baylor). I am curious what your job entails? I've been a LVN for 11 years but never worked in a hospital and now am trying to go back to school to finish my BSN and I'm wanting to work in the hospital for the experience alone...something I feel I'm lacking. I know that the hospitals really do not hire LVNs anymore and so I'm wanting to work as a tech. Please feel free to PM with any info and also how your hospital handles hiring....thanks!

Anyone...still curious about job duties?!

Hey! I am a tech at THR and have been for a little over a year. I am a nursing student so I am technically a nurse extern. My job duties besides the obvious vital signs are that I am able to start IV's, draw labs, insert foley catheters, EKG's, and insert NG tubes. Hope this helps:)

@smvtx23...thanks for responding! I am getting a little discouraged because it seems every PCA position I apply for they are emailing back already filled or that I'm not being considered...frustrating. I really need the hospital experience (as a LVN for 11 years I've worked many places/different areas but not in a hospital) as well as a position with a partnering hospital to increase my chances of being accepted into UTA's AP BSN program. I will continue to apply and see what happens but thanks for letting me know what type things PCAs do. I would truly love to get a position in a NICU or L&D as that is where I would like to work after I finish my degree..whenever that is??!! Thanks again!

Good luck!! I applied for 5 months before I finally heard something back. Don't get discouraged. I hope it works out!!

@smvtx23...thank you! I'm really trying to stay positive...I'm just continuing to apply!
