San Antonio ADN Q's

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello!

I am an ADN-RN Student in Michigan and my husband and plan on relocating down south when I graduate and pass my boards next summer (2010.) We have looked at Tennessee and Texas and are leaning towards the San Antonio area. I am curious about a few things and was hoping someone would give me some advice.

**I want to work in a hospital. Will I be limited or held back by my ADN, as opposed to a BSN? I plan to go on and eventually obtain my Masters, but for now I just want to work as an RN for awhile and pay off some debt and have babies! :)

**What is the job market like for Nurses in TX? Is it very competitive?

**What do RNs make (on Average) in San Antonio?

Any advice would be very helpful! Thank you! BTW....it is 7 degrees right now where I am....wonder why I want to move to TX?!!

Best school and neighborhood would be the Leon Valley area of san antonio. Its on the NW side. The schools are great. Less crime. Been here for 3 years.

I recently accepted a position in san antonio at SWG Hospital. Make sure no matter what you do that you have you PERMANENT license prior to relocating. I left my family and once down here was told I could not start work on my temporary license. If they board thinks there is ANYTHING that needs to be looked at on your application they will suspend the temporary licesnse as well....leaving you unable to practice as a nurse. I broke up a fight in 2004 and one of the girls pressed charges against me which was of course dismissed. The fact it is on my background check I run the possibility of a long drawn out investigation.

The hospital told me originally to get my temporary and I could start work...now once down here they told me due to texas strict guidlines they are not allowing anyone to start without the permanent. Also I am told if the old charge shows up it could be months for an investigation. I am sad, upset, and without a job currently. I did get an appartment in the westover area which is very nice. (west side area) Interstates are confusing but I am getting used to them. There are TONS of RN jobs here.

Please...do not come down here on a temporary!!! You will be disappointed. Take care of all the paperwork ahead of time.

Good luck

San Antonio is an amazing city. However the hospitals here are among the worst in the country to work for. I am a travel nurse and have been to around 20 hospitals in my career all over the country. My last contract was with Methodist Hospital. It is hands down the worst hospital in the country to be a nurse. They do not have one nurse on staff who has been there more than 5 years. They are forced to use 250 travel nurses at a time b/c they cannot keep staff. The pay is lousy and the management is even worse. They not only float you to different floors but also their other hospitals. In one week I worked in three different Methodists. I cannot fully describe how horrific it is in this nessage, but I promise you will be happier at any other job in the nation.

Specializes in Pediatrics.

I applied at Angel Staffing for a per diem job earlier this month. I have completed and passed all their testing requirements. Since then, I have not heard from them. I'm not sure what's next.
