Job hunting in the Houston suburbs.

I'm starting to get pretty discouraged with hunting for a GN position.

I will be graduating with my ADN in about a week, and so far I haven't had any luck with interviews! When I call to follow up all the HR departments tell me is "There is nothing we can do, sorry, we'll call you when we hear something".

I've never really had a job with a large company so I'm not really familiar with the right things to say to track down the right person. When I call they say that it's in the hands of the nursing recruiters or managers, but won't give me their names or numbers. Do I just need to do some stalking around to get the names of these people? I've tried dropping by as well and basically get shooed away in the same manner. They are always nice about it, but I don't feel like I'm getting anywhere. I call about once a week, and I always hear the same thing.. that I will be called back..but I started applying in late Feb/early March, so I think it's been enough time to be called by now. I haven't been super aggressive before because I was preparing for HESI, but now that I'm done with that I'm getting really anxious to find a job! A lot of my classmates already have internships.

Any words of advice? Or better yet, is anyone on here a nursing manager or recruiter?

Maybe I'm just not saying the right thing when I call.

They generally take in GN's into the GN programs only twice per year and they have to apply 6months or so in advance. So if you are to graduate in May your application would be due by December to start the residency/internships in June. So by this time they likely have hired most of the GN's that they will hire for the Summer and have only a few limited spots for GN's outside of the intership programs. These programs also have requirements like 3.0 gpa and certain HESI scores, and the hospitals give first preference to GN's that have been accepted to the internships for this reason. I don't know how true it is but I have been hearing prefence is also given to BSN graduates in the medical center hospitals from a few of my friends in ADN programs but, I'm not sure about suburban hospitals.

Maybe just keep applying but, since it is almost graduation time most places already have likely filled up their slots. Maybe try smaller hospitals or clinics.
