AE MSN at UT Austin Summer 2012

U.S.A. Texas

Anybody out there applying to the UT Austin AEMSN program for summer 2012? Haven't seen any posts about our group of hopefuls yet.

And I noticed the 117 too. Looks like we're all in the same boat!

I think the 117 was the number after they weeded out the people who didn't have the prerequisites or the minimum gpa etc. I'm guessing there had to be at least a few more initial applicants. I could be wrong though.

Did anyone notice that there were only 117 people that Jennifer emailed? I was hoping that maybe this means that the number of people applying this year went down ... I guess it could also just mean that there were a ton of people and she had to send two emails!!

I'm applying for child health role specialty, emphasis in teaching. I'm taking my last two pre-requisites next semester at ACC (Human Growth & Development and genetics).

Speaking of, does anyone know if there's a big difference between "genetics" and "molecular and cellular biology"? They both qualify for the genetics pre-req, couldn't really tell what the difference was from the course descriptions.

I normally hate January/February because they're the coldest and darkest months here ... but now I can't wait! Agh!

I'm in the AE-MSN program you speak of. When I had applied, they didn't even offer a course specifically titled Genetics at the community college I took my prerequisites at (I'm from Houston). I had taken General Biology I back in 2006, though, and they accepted that course in lieu of "Genetics".

Hi all,

I also applied this year, for Child Health emphasis on teaching. I haven't applied anywhere else so far so I'm very nervous. I'm finishing up my prereqs at ACC, but I still have pharmacology, physiology, and human development next semester so I have a ways to go. I also live in Austin...Eastside. If I don't get in I will be very disappointed:( So nervous!! *crosses fingers*

In case you don't get into the track you want, maybe they'll admit you as an Undeclared and you can choose your track next November. That's what they did for my year.

Can you give us any info? How many people are in the child health program? I'd really like advice for the interview because I'm very nervous about it.

That's great. What were your stats if you don't mind me asking? Like with grades and gre, etc.

I don't have the numbers off hand for the number of people in the Child Health programs, but I don't think it's one of the most competitive tracks. Adult Health CNS and the Psych NP are the most difficult to get into. I don't think you'll have a problem.

My GPA was... not terrific. I majored in History, and for my history major I think my GPA was about a 3.7ish. But overall... let's just say I took too many college courses that I shouldn't have.

Afterward, when I did my prerequisites at the community college, I got As and Bs in them.

My GRE probably was my strong suit. I taught test-prep, so standardized tests are fairly simple for me. I had a 1470 (780 in one section, 690 in the other -- can't remember which was which). I got a 4.5 on that Written Essay section, but when I applied last year they didn't even consider that Essay section for admission here.

That's great. I have pretty decent grades, 3.8 overall undergrad, A's and B's for prereqs. Only 1190 on the gre though. Based on practice tests I expected a 1290, being very strong on verbal and not so hot on math. On test day however somehow I messed up and got lower on verbal than math which is bizarre for me. I was kind of upset over that. Only 4.0 on the essay too so hopefully they won't count it this year either.

I wish you could have prepped me for the gre! Haha

You'll be fine. Heck, I even brought up 'AllNurses' in my interview (don't ask...). I'm sure you'll get in.

I was surprised by how large the cohort this year was. At the first day's orientation, I expected maybe 20-30 people. There's 60!
