Charles Drew University EL-MSN FALL 2014

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi there! I'm Sharon, and I'll be starting CDU's EL-MSN program this fall (2014). Anyone else starting the EL-MSN program at CDU this fall?

Oh, and I don't want to freak anyone out if you are waiting for your letters - I have no idea when they go out. Sorry! I was scheduled to enter with the spring 2014 cohort but deferred one semester in order to get married (at 36 years old, who wants to wait 3 years! ;)) So, if you're still waiting for your letter - good luck! I'm rooting for you!

Anyway, I'm starting this page because I'd love to meet everyone whose heading to CDU's EL-MSN program this fall & share information. And if there's enough interest we can start a Facebook page where we can all chat over the summer! (My friend is going to PA school at UW this summer and her cohort has a Facebook page and it's amazing, and I'm jealous. The PA's shouldn't have all the fun! ;))

Also, if there are any current Spring '14 students who want to chime in - I'd love to hear: how do you like the program? Is there anything you wish you'd known before Day 1?

I can't wait to meet everyone!

Hi Sharon,

I'm still waiting for a response from the school!! So nervous, but glad you started this thread. I've been wanting to get in touch with fellow classmates (thinking positively). Anyway, hope to hear soon to update you!

PS: Congrats on your wedding! And yes, we should start a fb page :)

Hey vaesanch! Good to meet you, and good luck! It's a nerve-wrecking experience for sure. I received my acceptance while in jury duty, so you never know when you'll hear. I'm glad you're thinking positively. :)

I'm going to create a FB page and would love to add you - I'll figure out how to PM on this forum so I can get your FB details. I hope to see you in the fall! Be sure to let this thread know when you hear. :)

Hello snhelm. Congrats on being accepted. I too am waiting to hear a response. When you got your acceptance, how many weeks was it before the start of the semester. Also did you have to interview and take the TEAS?

Hi Sharon.. its 'vaesanch'.. I couldn't log on with that account for some reason so I had to create a new account. Anyway, great news.. I got accepted!!! I am so happy to share this news with you, since it means we will officially be classmates together :) Please let me know if you do create the fb page, I would love to be added to the group!

@lishi I suggest you call your admissions counselor. They are very good about returning your calls and/or emailing you back. Depending on when you submitted your application, they will have a decision 4-6 weeks after that. I turned in my application early March and was just told on Monday. But, I kept calling and emailing my admissions counselor to find out.. almost every day since last week lol until they finally had a response. But, that is just to know if u got accepted. The actual admissions package will not be mailed out until June. Sharon, I am not sure if you have yours yet, since u were accepted since last semester. Also, they will either let you know u got accepted, need an interview or not accepted. Not everyone needs an interview and there is no TEAS examination. Once you're in, you're in! I hope you hear back soon.. I'm sure it will be good news :)

Can't wait to start this new journey together! Look forward to hearing from other students as well!

Oh thats great! CONGRATS! What an amazing feeling. I was hoping to get my packet in sooner but I had to reschedule my GRE which delayed everything a bit. Would you mind telling me your stats (if you prefer you can email me at [email protected]), Compared to other schools I found it hard to find stats on admitted students. Thank a bunch.

Hope to see you in the fall

Hi lishi! Oooh, the waiting game. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! I think Vanessa answered your questions, but here's my response: I also didn't have an interview or take the TEAS. (I'm not sure where the idea of taking the TEAS has come from. I feel like this is a rumour that was started on a thread a year or two ago. Hmmm. Anyway, our program is a graduate-level program and the TEAS is generally for undergraduate programs (I did take the TEAS but it was for an accl-BSN program, elsewhere)). And I was notified of my acceptance toward the end of November of last year, and had an orientation date of the first week of January of this year (I deferred to this fall) - so the time between acceptance and orientation is only a few weeks.

Regarding academic stats, I'll say this about me: I wasn't an academic superstar in my earlier years BUT I did make HUGE improvements in my academic record between my undergraduate grades and all my nursing pre-reqs. So I was able to submit an application that proved I was capable of handling a rigorous, graduate-level nursing program NOW even though, just 5 years ago, I probably wouldn't have been able to. Life, right? I also went down to CDU with my fiance for an "information session" (wasn't so much a traditional info. session but more like a series of informal chats with professors and advisors, as well as a typical tour of the campus) so I had a good feel for the kind of school CDU is, what their mission is, and whether or not me and my professional goals would be a good fit. But the truth is, it could have gone the other way, you know? I mean who ever really knows what the admissions committee is looking for. I found it helpful, given my academic history, that I was able to submit letters of recommendation, take the GRE and write an essay - I have no doubt all those things helped me. (Although I will say this, I did horribly in the math portion of the GRE.) I don't know if I would have been as successful in a points-only admission system.

Keep this thread posted with any news, ok? I'll be putting a private FB page together for those of us entering the fall class, and I really hope to see you on there!

Sharon :)

Vanessa! CONGRATS GIRL! That's great news! I'm so happy for you. It's a relief, isn't it? Yeah, I got my admissions packet for spring semester, but haven't received anything for the fall and I would think I would. If I don't get anything by the end of June, I'll give the admissions department a call. :)

Ok, so now that I know there's 1 person that'll join the FB page (lol) I'll create it. I tried to PM on this forum, but because I don't have enough posts in my history I don't have that ability.

How do you think we should do this? I'm a little leery giving out my email address in a public forum. Hmm. I'll create the page and see if I can post the link here, so that you can go to it and I can add you. That way other accepted students can be added as the summer progresses, if that want.

Ok, I'll see if I can make this work! So happy to know someone starting in the fall - I remember in my pre-nursing program we were like family (for better and worse, LOL!) I can only imagine what this program will be like. So excited!

Sharon :)

Sharon,

Thank you sooo much for your response. It is realllly helpful! I know the program is fairly new and I found it hard to find out information. I seem to be in the same boat that you were in. I did not do so well in my undergrad, below a 3.0. Completing a neuroscience degree while working full time and being on your own at 18 was difficult. However, as you did, my grades got dramatically better for my nursing pre reqs. I feel as though my application is strong, I have been volunteering for 2 1/2 years at Ceadrs Sinai and have a lot of experience where that is concerned so hopefully that helps. As far as GRE I have noooo idea where I stand, I do not know what average score is. I do not know anyone who had to take it. I bought two books and studied off and on for about a month. I do know some people get super intense and study for like 9 months and take a kaplan course. I would love to know your score if thats ok so I can kinda gauge how I did, you can email me if you would like. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Lishi,

I have no problem sharing my stats on here.. I remember the nerves of the waiting game and searching through every thread to see if I had any chance of getting in with my stats. I am here to testify you can do anything as long as you're patient! Well anyway here are my stats. I started my undergrad at a community college and transferred with a 3.0 average GPA (I went to multiple JCs). After transferring, I majored in Human Biology and graduated with a 2.8!! A very low GPA indeed, especially for someone who was initially trying to go to med school! For better or worse, however, I still needed some pre-reqs to fulfill after I graduated. I completed those pre-reqs with a 3.8. I have also been a hospital volunteer at multiple hospitals including LAC+USC, Dominican, and currently at St. Francis Medical Center. Your stats look very good to me and I don't see why you wouldn't get in! Honestly, the program is very new. I don't think they are very competitive. I think as long as you meet all their requirements, there shouldn't be a reason why you wouldn't get in. I also haven't heard of anyone who has been rejected other than having an incomplete application. If anyone begs to differ, please do so. When I went in person to get information on the program, the very nice representative told me they get a lot of applicants but most of them are incomplete which is why they don't get in. As for the GRE, just take it and don't worry about it! I took mine cold turkey and I didn't get the best scores! I got 147 on verbal reasoning, 145 quantitative reasoning, and 3.5 on analytical writing. If you're not sure about the numbers, they're a bit below average but I think what's more important is just taking it.

As far as the TEAS.. the school required that test when it first started.. back in 2010. I was reading through old threads and they apparently took it on the day of their interview! Lucky for us, that is not required anymore :)

Thank you, Sharon! I am really excited to be your classmate and I'm sure we will be as close as family lol. Thank you for setting up the fb page.. let me know if u have any luck with that :)

Sharon,

Were you able to start a group? It really sucks I can't pm you either!! I want to share with u my email address so we can start the fb page! Lol. Hmmm....it says we need to write at least 15 topics. I wonder what that means lol

Okay, so I just created a group. Search for "CDU EL-MSN FAll 2014" and let me know if you find it :)
