Oklahoma Board and Excelsior

U.S.A. Oklahoma

Published

I'm an Excelsior-educated ADN RN trying to come to Oklahoma for a travel assignment. I have been an RN for 11 years, and was an LPN for four years before that. Am I correct in understanding that the Oklahoma Board has decided that my education was somehow inadequate and I do not qualify to practice as an RN without an additional preceptorship of 30 hours in OB and psych?

How can these board go back and say those of us who have been practicing for 10+ years are suddenly incompetent to be licensed?

Has anyone gone through this preceptorship to get licensed?

You know what, nevermind. If the board in Oklahoma wants to decide that my education is inadequate and I'm not competent to practice as a nurse without going back to school, I'll go elsewhere.

Even California is grandfathering in Regents nurses and Illinois allows those who have been practicing for more than two years to get licensed.

Just Finished My Adn Thru Excelsior This Past July And Had To Do The Preceptorship In October I Was Assigned To Midwest Regional Hospital In Midwest City. Oklahoma Would Not Accept My 7 Years Of Experience In Ob So I Had To Do Both. It Was Cool Once I Got Over The Fact That I Was Not Going To Be Allowed To Sit For My Boards Until I Succumbed To This Silly Little 30hours That They Require. I Personally Thought That It Was Ridiculous Myself. But It Was Quick I Did Two 15hour Days Because I Wanted To Get The Out Of There.

Where did you do it and how much did it cost? I was under the impression it would be two weeks on some kind of weird schedule with OB and I have to do psych also.

Although even if I could do it quickly, there's a principle. And making someone with 7 years OB experience go through this is especially ludicrous.

Someone at Excelsior must have seriously ticking off people at a few boards of nursing. I'm wondering how many more states are going to jump on the wagon -- 14 years into my nursing career (LPN and RN) -- and suddenly decide I'm not qualified to be licensed or practice without going back to school in some form.

It's such a slap in the face.

i went to midwest city regional it is right there east of oklahoma city not even 30 miles away. i think it cost $200 dollars if i can remember correctly. i mean really a true insult to a nurse that has been out there for years i think really it is just a way to make some money by the ok board. but i just scheduled it with the director there and she allowed me to do day one on psych floor 7am to 10pm and then the next day i did ob across the street at the labor and delivery center same time frame. i wanted to get that mess over with.

Once you did that, were you able to get a temp permit right away?

once i did that the next week i was a go and i could sit for my boards because the director there she mailed it to the board and it is right there in the same city. so as soon as you finish it you could probably have your temp permit that same week.

Do you have the name of the contact person there you arranged that with, and how long ago was that? I'm checking to see if the facility is desperate enough to negotiate the cost of the preceptorship, which is certainly fair when we are talking about me giving up 30 hours of my life with no compensation.

Where they testing you for those hours or instructing you?

Thanks for the help!

no i was not tested at all i basically followed a nurse around the psych unit and ob unit and they assigned me one patient on ob and i helped out on the psych unit i was not tested though. the lady who set up my schedule was through excelsior college but i cannot remember her name maybe if you call medwest regional hospital and ask for the excelsior college director there, maybe. good luck

Obviously there is a reason that the OBN and others are requiring Regents/ Excellsior graduates to perform additional "clinical" hours. I would have to draw into question the reputation and credibility of the institution. Just my thoughts.

You don't know me, my practice, or any of the other graduates of the program. So how dare you insinuate I'm not qualified to work as an RN without further training? I have been practicing 11 years as an RN with no disciplinary actions or lawsuits.

So obviously my education WAS adequate.

The reason they are requiring it is because there are some judgmental idiots on the board that have decided to suddenly penalize and insult nurses who have been out working for many years by saying that we aren't qualified to do our jobs anymore. And, oh, I don't know...maybe some of them have some financial interests in the programs charging for the additional "preceptorship."

While I understand you have been practicing for 11 years something is "missing" in this program. I don't know, could it be that you don't have clinical rotations?? What, a weekend examination is adequate to fulfill 4 semesters of clinicals?? Get real. While I refuse to call you an idiot as you have me I find it hard to believe there ARE NOT shortcomings with the Excelsior program when no other program in this country is required to perform additional preceptorships. I reasearched Excelsior extensively prior to choosing a nursing school so I am VERY familiar with the CPNE and the Pearson Vue examinations. I am just trying to understand why the OBN would require additional training for graduates of Excelsior regardless of years of practice. While I don't feel the OBN is managed by a group of "idiots" as you have stated there is some reason this has become a requirement for Excelsior graduates to practice in OK. Additionally, why would they single out Excelsior???
