Hi All Nurses.com,

I'm looking forward to an assignment in L&D in NYC for August and am having a bit of trouble. I'm hearing a lot of "don't go there's" from people who HADN"T worked in a NY hospital but had friends who did, or had opinions of OTHER departments at certain hospitals and I would like to get some advice from some true blue L&D nurses that are employed by or assigned to NYC hospitals.

If you are a traveler, what agency got you your assignment and how was/is that assignment. Where are you housed? If you are on staff in L&D, what makes you stay at your hospital? Would either of you recommend me to your hospital. I love this site because you get the nitty gritty so to speak. So let er rip! :)

What I have on the plate are for L&D at: Lutheran Hospital and NY Roosevelt. What I would like is Mount Sinai and possibly NY Presbyterian.

Any advice/opinions/ yays/nays for any of these hospitals for L&D? Can you suggest any other hospitals in NYC for L&D?

Thanks a million in advance for your assistance.

Can't help you with your choices, but I'd say go for it. I did an assignment in NYC over the summer last year and the hospital left A LOT to be desired, but I'm actually thinking of signing on for them again just so I can go back.

Is this gonna be your first assignment ever? First one to NY? The questions I will absolutely ask before contracting with a hospital again are these: In depth info about charting, how much duplicate charting, what type of monitoring software and is charting done on the strip or elswhere? Are nurses able to give IVP meds and do nurses do SVE or do we have to wait for a resident? Anesthesia and MDs in house 24/7? What's the visiting policy? Locked unit or can visitors just wander in and out at will?

I did my time at Jack Weiler in the Bronx. We had to chart the same info in no less than 4 places :banghead: They doubled the rooms, just put up a curtain and slid a second bed into the labor rooms. Nurses couldn't give ANY IVP meds. If my pt wanted stadol, I had to get the doc to come check her, pull the meds out of pyxis and then wait for the doc to come back around to push it! Craziness.

I used Cross Country, and had no issues with them. Got my $ on time, checks were always correct. I took the housing allowance and found my own place through the craigslist sublets. That was awesome too, it was *half* my stipend!

Good luck!

Hi phriedomrn,

Thanks for your reply. This will be my 3rd travel assignment in L&D, but my first one in NY. I will check out the craigslist sublets.

Hi. Im not a L&D nurse but I work with a chik who absolutly loves mount siani. You should try it. I'm a traveler also. The other traveler is right find your own housing. you get so much more money with the stipend. Iwas with american moble and nurses rx. the big names have a certian amt they will give you. White glove agency can be disorganized at times but they pay the best housing stipend that i have heard of so far.
