Nurses overcoming obstacles

Nurses Disabilities

Published

Hello all! I'm 19 years old and am slated to start my nursing school including clinicals in late august. I've worked incredibly hard to be able to achieve this and I'm very proud of myself. Now for the more complicated part, when I was 17 I was diagnosed with spondyloarthritis. I'm on humira biweekly to treat it and I'm fairly well controlled. I have my flare ups, and I still hurt daily, but it's nothing compared to how it was before I was on this medication. I've had health problems my whole life and I've done well overcoming them. It's what inspired me to be a nurse. My problem is this, my school requires your immunization titers to be drawn. I've had all of my childhood shots done, and my flu vaccines yearly. I have the shot record as proof. However, when I had my titers drawn it said that the results were negative. I've done lots of research, and my humira can't cause false negatives. I'm not sure if it's my lowered immune system, or a fluke. But across the board negatives is almost impossible. And I'm trying as hard as I can to find out anything that I can use to help figure out what my next steps should be. I'm facing the consequence of possibly not being able to finish nursing school. My question is, has anyone experienced any negative results in their titers? I forgot to add that I'm not allowed to get any live vaccines, which all of these are, so I can't receive any boosters to get my count to where it needs to be. Being a nurse is my dream, and I will not let this stop my from achieving my dream. Thank you for reading this, and I appreciate any kind of input or ideas!
