Depression is listed discipline by the Wisconsin Board.

Nurses Disabilities

Published

Hi guys:

I have a couple of posts on this site, searching for some answers. This question just occurred to me as well. I have a history of being treated for depression in my health records. In an investigation I of course released my records to the board. (Wisconsin).

My health history PLUS the board stating in their "Final Order" states I must continue being treated for my depression.

In the mean time, I have not had gainful employment. NOT for lack of trying. Had to have double hernia repair being an uninsured individual. Physically recovered now. BUT still being uninsured must go to County Mental Health to get treatment and or a referral to an uninsured clinic before they can treat me. Yes the county's rules here in Milwaukee.

Should I or could I use this diagnoses of depression to start with an agency such as The Department of Workforce Development. Should I insist that the intake person at "county" sign me up as depression is considered a disability in the DWD literature? Is this even an option?

The fact of being a male without dependents has been a nightmare. Assistance has/is very slim if you are uninsured. Will the diagnosis of depression help ease this burden? Should I use it? Need to work, want to work, want to initiate the boards orders but again, that all costs money.

Again, listed on the Department of Workforce Development depression is a disability. Which all lead to this in the first place. Thoughts? Ideas? Experience? Let me know.

Thanks

Thanks

Wow.... I'd look into a disability attorney who would talk to you for free....it sounds like it's been impossible to meet the requirements (I understand- I'm disabled, and had to deal with IL public mental health initially and it was an absolute nightmare- if you're not totally insane, there are no programs to help, so then if you agree, you're listed in the "borderline" category- a fate worse than death in mental health).

Also, the Americans with Disabilities Act website may have some info...and they're not bound by the state rules, and essentially can help you figure out how to comply within the fed rules, which generally trump the states...

Thank you xtxrn.

I have looked at the website. It was informative as to what is considered a disability. Also from what I read, it is a fine and sticky line. My thought is, perhaps the label of depression could/would allow the Department of Vocational Rehab assist me gain employment to act on the requirements and hopefully to gain employment as a nurse again.

Sounds like you've had experience in this tight spot. Please feel free to IM me or post here with YOUR experience if your comfortable.

Thanks again.

May as well check with the DVR. :)

I had a diagnosis that required (per my employer- not state) to get MD documentation (not the Social Worker I was actually in therapy with) to 'prove' that I wouldn't be a risk to have around. Stemmed from assault-very demoralizing to begin with- & NEVER been an issue at work.
