PA BON petition for Mental/Physical Exam

Nurses Recovery

Published

Without going into too much history, I was hoping to get advice on what to do. I understand this forum isn't for legal advice, I'm looking for people who have been in my position and what their outcomes have been.

In 2010, I volunarily entered PNAP and completed 7 months of treatment. Due to my financial position (I lost my house, my job, etc), I had to leave the program when I moved in with family in another state (across the country) to get back on my feet financially. A few weeks later, I recieved paperwork 'requesting' my partcipation with VRP. I did not fill out the paperwork nor did I 'join'. Now, I have recieved paperwork from the PA BON requesting me to partake in a Mental/Physical Exam and lists reasons (all which were taken from my voluntary affiliation with PNAP). My travel expenses back to PA for the exam will cost me over $500 (which I don't even have). I am assuming if I am honest during the exam, I will lose my license or be ordered to participate in VRP. I have been clean all of my life except for a 3 month period of narcotic abuse following a surgical procedure (which is why I entered PNAP in the first place). I have not used narcotics for almost 2 years. My issue is that I cannot remain in PA to participate in VRP because I have no job, no house, etc. I'm not sure entering a similar program in the state I am temporarily in (if that's even an option?) is a good idea because I do not plan to be here for more than a year. Is there anyway to put VRP on hold? I know that sounds completely rediculous because it should be used as a recovery tool, but I honestly would only be doing it to get my license back into good standing. Is it even worth going to the exam? Should I just voluntarily give up my license?

I'm so confused. I would love to hear your opinions and your experiences if you have been in/are in/have experience with my situation.

Thank you!

Dearworried, actually your idea is not ridiculous at all to me, putting your license on hold! Thats because these voluntary recovery programs are anything but Voluntary or Recovery friendly! They are expensive, punitive, and restrictive, to everyone who enters them without a case by case basis analysis. I would suggest to talk to an attorney but I know funds are limited as you stated. I my opinion VRP is the farthest thing from a recovery tool and Im only in it because I have to be! AA and God are my recovery. However, dont surrender your nursisng license so easliy. I would see if you could talk to an attorney or write VRP a letter stating your reasons for dropping out at least its documented and send a copy to the BON directly. Emphasize you dont have the money to comply with their program. Good luck to you and your recovery keep us informed.
