I believe that staff are also being sent home when it's slow and getting called back in without receiving call back pay.

This is pretty universal in Hawaii hospitals.

It sucks. Hospitals here can pull a lot of crap simply because, in many cases, there are no other places for a nurse to go.

That's why we have unions. Not perfect, of course, even with the unions, but a helluva better here than it would be without them.

No doubt the "FastStaff" bunch that has been brought in to our shores before.

A nasty bunch, IMHO, and pretty poorly equipped. Poor skills, willing to work 60 hrs per week.

Here's hoping the strike will be over with quickly, for the sake of the patients.

Well, my mother is one of those nurses going on strike this weekend. I can't help but feel incredibly offended that they are bringing nurses in from Hawaii. Where's the Aloha?

I went on strike the last time the "Big Five" went on strike here in Hawaii.

Yes, there are those who would sell out their fellow nurses for the almighty dollar, all the time saying they are only "concerned about the patients."

EVERY ONE of the nurses I knew who crossed the picket line did it for strictly monetary reasons. To each his own, but "concern for patients" was far in the background.

Good luck to your Mom, CardiacRN. It's a tough thing to go through. But when all is said and done, it really does make you realize how little we are worth to the institutions we work for.

Thanks...she's been a nurse for 20 years, and never been on strike. I remember when she was in nursing school. One of the things she taught me was to never cross that picket line. Amazing where peoples morals lie. If they were really interested in patients, then the replacement nurses would stay away. The issues at hand deal with patient care.

There is no amount of money they could pay me to cross.

What really gets me is how the same nurses who crossed the picket line were jumping with joy when they saw the new union contract. They gave no thought to the nurses who lost almost seven weeks of pay while they made a small fortune as scabs.
