Questions about nursing school...

I've been reading the boards for some time, but I finally just signed up! I'm confused about what to do, and what direction to take so I figure this is a good place to get some guidance. :)

I am 32, and have 2 children. I have always wanted to go to nursing school but something has always gotten in the way. I am just finishing school for Medical Assisting. (What a waste of money!) :crying2: But I am almost done so I am sticking it out. I have been considering an LPN course but I don't think I have many of the pre-requisities unless I go somewhere like Porter & Chester or Lincoln Tech.

I've taken online classes in the past and some were general ed so maybe I can use them? I also considered a few classes at the community college but I really don't know if I am just wasting more time and money. I don't have any chemistry classes or anything so maybe I am at rock bottom?

Thanks for any suggestions! You all seem to know so much!! :)

(I am in CT if that matters)

I started back at 31 and 2 kids! I had my basic courses done (math, english, psych, social spych, speech) but still had to do all my sciences..eek! I had to take 6 or 7 classes before I could apply for NS. I am doing the ADN route because I still need another 5 or 6 classes to do the BSN route! It is much cheaper to do prereqs at a CC as long as they transfer. Your best bet is to go to whatever schools you are considering and speak to a counselor. Good luck!

I have Math, English, Psych and Sociology. So maybe I am not that bad off! :) You made me feel better. No sciences though. Double Eek! LOL

There doesn't seem to be many nursing schools here in CT without an extreme waiting list. That is probably also my problem, I am not patient. :)

Look at what the waiting lists are and the pre-req's. I did all the pre-req's to get them out of the way so while I am in the core classes, I didn't have such a heavy class load. By the time you are done you may only have a short time to wait. There still is chem, A&P 1 & 2, and Microbiology. Meanwhile you can work as a Med Assistant, and apply for financial aid and even may be eligable for Pell grants to pay for your schooling. Where there is a will there is a way and if this is the path God wants you to follow, I think you should go for it. The waiting list here in Wisc. is really long also, up to 3 years.

I started back to school at 28 and with 4 kids. I had never been to college and literally started from scratch. I am now 32 and will (hopefully!) graduate in May 2012 with my ADN. It's been a long road but I figured the time would pass anyway, why not be productive? It was slow going with my pre-reqs because my kids were still so young. I figure by the time I start working as an RN, I will still have 30+ years of working before I retire ;) Don't be discouraged, you're still young! I have women in my program that are well into their 40's and even 50's. Good luck!
