Night Shift Lovers Anyone?

I am interested in working night shifts, but am not sure I can cut it. How did you discover that you were a night person? Are there any chances in nursing school to test my theory that I like the graveyard shift.

Can volunteer for a few night shifts at a hospital and see how I feel? Just thinking ahead... Staying up all night reading a good book or talking to a friend or dancing does not seem to be an adequate test my night shift tolerance.

Any ideas would help.

Well, I was born at night. Not sure if there is really any correlation there. I have ALWAYS been a night person...as far back as I can remember...I was the kid that would not go to bed after mom and dad coming into the room several times...and then I would sleep all monring. As a teenager, I remember in the summers, working late at night or staying up super late. In my 20's, I always took the evening shifts and felt like my brain functioned better at 1pm. When I was in college (other than nursing school), my classes were at night. So it's natural for me.

You may be able to get hired for days and switch to nights if your facility has any openings....or vice versa....

I prefer nights myself. Never been much of a morning person, when I used to work first shift at the hospital I would get written up so much for being late. My supervisor suggested to me that I might be a person who would work best for nights. No lie, I worked a few nights for a friend after that and was hooked, changed my shift the following weeks when a position was opened. I can stay up pretty well all night with no problems, but once day hits I'm like a vampire searching for a place to sleep. I currently work now on nights as a Private Home Aide, but once schools done that's the only shift I'll be on.
