Hi there,

I am a nursing student and am doing a simulation lab on the new born. my role is the newborn expert. This includes being able to provide the "new born nurses" steps and guides of what to do normal findings as well as cue them when they had forgotten something. I currently in the community setting and will be in the maternity floor next week, so I am at a disadvantage than a few of my classmates.

I've read my books and watched videos.

And I am quite confused as to what the nurse does once the mother delivers the newborn.

Do I do a set of vitals, Apgar, head to toe.?

what will do I do when the baby is crying as I am trying to assess the baby?

Our instructor gave us a guide for the head to toe. What will be expected will depend on your instructor but usually vitals and a head to toe are a place to start. As for what to do if the baby cries. Use a glove finger to stick your pinky of your non dominant hand in their mouth. You need to feel for their palette anyway so just do that first and leave your finger their while you can.
