Financial aid in nursing school..help!

Nursing Students General Students

Hi,

So heres my dilemma, I might have to postpone starting Med Surg 1 (2nd semester) of my nursing program due to a hold that was placed on my account, because of a balance I owe from last semester.

I'm working on getting the funds, interviewed for this part-time gig doing homecare and I currently work 32 hours nights. Bigger problem is that the class is full, (so even when funds are paid off, I still can't register if all the spots are filled) school is basically telling me to wait it out and see if a spot opens up around August. There is a 1st semester nursing course currently in summer session and the woman I spoke to said that someone might not pass and then I can slide in if I catch it first. Welcome to my life in dealing with the admin at my nursing school.

If I don't get into this course in the fall this will push my graduation date back a whole semester and I won't be with my class. The thought of this is really disappointing. (But willing to deal with it if necessary, I have 4 other co-reqs I have to take to graduate, so I could work on completing those).

Now the liguistics; I do get federal loans through fafsa 9,500 a year as an independent student but that isn't enough to cover my tuition. The school I attend is a private college. I've applied for Perkins and Nursing student loan (6,000) which I was granted after much harrasing to the financial aid director but you can only be granted it per school year.

Due to my efc I'm not eligilbe for grants because I'm not considered need based. I don't have great enough credit to be eligible for a private loan on my own, and I have tried to two cosigners but were declined. I have applied to over 5 scholarships this summer alone just waiting to hear back from any of them.

Anybody in the same prediciment or know of any success stories to overcome, I loved every bit of last semester and hate the thought of being delayed because of lack of funds (I passed with a B :)

I had to vent (less than an hour left at work).. Thanks for reading.

Hi, Im applying to Laboure college this fall and just wanted to know how did you go about getting the issue resolved? I most likely will have to go through the same thing, sense this will be a second degree for me and pell grants and loans are no way near enough to cover tuition. Thanks

@RNlolo I'm still trying to figure it out. That's why I put up this post to see if anyone else had any ideas. Hey they allow science transfers now so that will be more cost effective if you've taken them at another school. I had to take a&p 1 & ll at the school so that set me back in adding to my balance.
