Balancing School/Career & Homeschool Life

Nursing Students General Students

Hi everyone! This is my first post, so apologies if it's in the wrong place! I am a mom of three kids, ages 5, 3, and 1. We are a homeschooling family. Any nursing students or nurses out there that also homeschool? I would love to connect with you and hear your insight and advice if you'd like to share it with me. Thank you!

Hi! I have 2 kids, ages 8 and 1, and we are a homeschooling family as well! I'm not in nursing school yet, but I'm doing my last few prereqs, and I'm hoping to be accepted into nursing school for fall of 2015. I'd love to connect with you!

Hey! That's awesome! I still have a ways to go before actually starting nursing school, maybe another year or two depending on how long the wait list is. It's funny how as a teenager & young adult, I never had any interest in becoming a nurse...or any career in the medical field for that matter. But now as a mom I'm thinking more about how I can work but have a flexible schedule. I also had no clue that I would be a homeschooling parent until my first baby was about 3.

Let's definitely talk more! I definitely want to surround myself with positive & uplifting people rather than friends (& some of my family) that tell me I'm crazy and there's no way I can do it. : )

I never wanted anything to do with the medical field when I was younger, too. It wasn't until my first child was born 4 months premature and I spent every day of 4 months with him in the NICU, getting to know the NICU nurses. It was those nurses who inspired me, and made me realize how powerful and caring of a career being a nurse can be. And still, even though I became interested in nursing at that time, it still took me about 6 years to convince myself that I actually could be a good nurse. So it was a long road getting to the point of "yes! I'm going to work my butt off and be an amazing nurse, and be a wonderful caregiver!", but I'm here now!

I originally had my son in public school, up until halfway through the year of 1st grade. My son has developmental disabilities, and I found out that he was being mistreated at school by his para. He was depressed and unhappy, and I didn't know why because he doesn't know to come home and tell me if he's being mistreated. When I finally figured out all the things that were going on at school without my knowledge, my husband and I scheduled meetings with the principal, his teacher, his special ed teacher, and the therapists...and the principal's conclusion was that we were overreacting to our son being mistreated. That was the end of it for me, and I took him out of school and started homeschooling. It took a few months, but his confidence came back stronger than ever, and he's really loving learning now. You can totally homeschool your kids. It's not always easy, but it can be tremendously beneficial to your entire family!
