I know that others have probably asked the question before, but I can't find it...

I'm getting a ICU preceptorship in 2 months and want to review. What are the most common issues I should research? What skills will I need to fine-tune?

What type of ICU? Cardiac, medical, surgical, transplant or everything?......

Hello, there is a thread called"tips for new nurse in icu".....check it out. You will need to familiarize yourself with hemodynamics for example the management of septic shock is different from cardiogenic or hypovolemic shock. Definitely know the most commonly used drips nitro, dopamine, dobutamine, vasopressin, phenylephrine, lasix, amiodarone, milrinone, hypotonic/isotonic/hypertonic solutions. EKGs are very important and what a change might indicate. Learn your assessment thoroughly it might save your patient from a code. ABGs, criteria for intubating and extubating. Basically ALWAYS have a rationale that is evidence based for anything you do!.....few diagnosis and patho to start heart failure different types and their management, ARDS, MI also have different management, asthma exacerbation, dka, stroke differences n management. You must always know your pts...hgb,hct,plt,wbc, sodium, potassium,magnesium, ABG n vent settings if your patient is intubated...MD expect this info . Remember you will feel overwhelmed it is normal. Hang in there. Keep us updated.
