Frontier from Canada?

Specialties CNM

Hello all! :)

Just a quick question - have any of you ever done the Frontier CNM program from Canada? If so, how did that work out for you, and how was it finding preceptors and such? I live in British Columbia and am wondering how it would all work.

Thanks a bunch!

Sheila

Hi Sheila,

I'm a current Frontier SNM. Are you Canadian or American? I ask because if you're Canadian the training and licensure system is quite different between the US and Canada. I think it might be difficult for you to get reciprocity there. (I looked into it once.) If you're American and are thinking about eventually working as a CNM in the states I think doing much of your schooling there is absolutely possible. I have many classmates that are from all over the world - in countries in Africa, Asia and Europe. As a student you have to come to campus in Kentucky twice during the program. Once at the beginning for Frontier Bound (orientation) and once before you begin clinicals to practice skills. Other than that the whole didactic portion is all online. You can even do clinicals outside the US I believe but it must be with a CNM w malpractice insurance and at least a year of practice experience.

Hope that helps!

It does help, thanks! I'm Canadian, but I'm doing my BSN in the States (as we speak!). I know the system is different, but there is a bridging program for CNMs to be able to work in Canada - I believe it takes about 8mo to a year. :)

Oh that's very cool Sheila! Where is the bridge program offered?

Well it used to be like this... MMBP Home Page | cmrc-ccosf But I just noticed it's temporarily closed due to bugs of some sort. In the mean time they are sending people to this bridging program: Ryerson University: The Chang School (2013â€"2014): International Midwifery Pre-registration Program (IMPP)

That is so encouraging to hear! Thank you! I'm a labor and delivery travel nurse who has been interested in becoming a CNM through Frontier for years. I'm also very interested in working a year long contract in Saudi Arabia, and have been researching to see whether it'd be possible to work there as an RN during the didactic portion of the program. (I've talked to other travelers in Saudi who are getting their master's while working there but none have gone to Frontier.) Guess I'd just have to coordinate going to Frontier Bound/making sure I'm in the states and what not.
