I have been an RN (BSN) for 12 years, but I have spent the last almost 7 years as a stay at home mom due to their father being in the military with frequent overseas deployments. I worked on an Ortho/Neuro/Trauma floor as a new-grad...and then an ortho/med-surg floor, and then as a float pool nurse for the 3 hospitals in my area.

I am now a single mom looking for my way back into nursing. I can't imagine going back to 12 hour shifts/weekends/holiday as a single mom with no family nearby.

I have been looking into case management. There are some insurance companies in my area (Virginia Beach) that are hiring case managers. Some offer the potential to work from home (which I feel would be ideal for me), but that is not an absolute necessity...Optima, Anthem/Wellpoint, etc...

My first question is whether or not I even have a fighting chance at something like that without recent nursing experience?? Also, any tips on what I can be doing to get my foot into case management or something similar. I've seen a few nurse careline jobs posted, but they only have weekend shifts available at this time. Not sure if that is something that I would really be interested in anyways.

I have been looking at networking with some of the nursing associations in my area as well.

Any tips from those of you experienced in case management or utilization management?? Feel free to message me if you have recommendations of job opportunities or information on different employers. Thank you!!
