you don't get antibiotics for a runny nose. I have a patient's daughter (who's a nurse!!) demanding the doctor prescribe antibiotics for her mom who has some nasal congestion. The doctor evaluated her yesterday and did not want to treat because her symptoms were so mild.
Short answer? Because we live in a society that believes there is a magic pill for everything. We've become conditioned to instant gratification, instant relief, and instant solutions - and we get upset if we can't have it.
I've got one even better....A young (20ish) Pt. comes in with positive flu test 3 days ago, has been on Tamiflu since then with Tylenol q4 hours. Still running a fever of 102, body aches, chills, sweating, dehydrated, hasn't eaten anything in 48 hours. Doc wants to admit him....Pt. and father start "bargaining" and asks for a Z-Pak and chest x-ray. Took some convincing but he did agree to be admitted for IV fluids.
...that the nursing and medical staff aren't trying to be mean to your kid when they ask you to hold your child so testing can done, shots can be given, weights can be obtained, etc. Also, that we don't have time to stand around while you bargain with your two-year old about the same reasons given above. :angryfire

*face palm*. I guess she didn't pay much attention during class and clinicals.
Maybe we should have a face palm smiley.
It's the same people who wonder why, after having surgery, they are having pain.Really? Really? I mean--really?
and their answer is, "Had I known it would be this painful, I wouldn't have had it done."
Really? So living with a necrotic appendix is an option?
Really?
*shakes head*
Hysterical isn't it!!!!!!!!! I love that...
