So I am browsing allnurses.com checking out new threads

And for once the ad at the top of a thread page strikes me.

"Do you use Cocaine?"

It appears to be soliciting people who use Cocaine to participate in a research study.

Am I the only one that thinks that is bit odd?

yep, that's odd alright!

I don't find it that odd. We have lots of nurses in recovery. If this helps get more into recovery it would be a good thing. Something tells me it would be a study to assist to stop using so that might be a great thing. If it raises awareness of the scope of the problem of drug use by nurses or it encourages a nurse to assist another into a recovery mode it would be good. We see drug use a lot in our profession. Who better to ask for help to locate people who are in need.

Heard one exactly like that on the radio, except it was "do you use methamphetamine?

"if you use methamphetamine, you could be eligible for a study, blah, blah". Struck me as odd. The voice sounded like what you might hear in an ad for high-end kitchen appliances.

well, you know, people need high-end kitchen appliances, whether they use meth or not.

Hey, you're right!! Right now, I need a side by side fridge-freezer w/ a built in "family center" computer, ice, crushed ice, pullout chilled drawer for snacks, and a TV. Where do I go to get it? :chuckle

First I want a nice, newly built house to put that side by side fridge-freezer in. While at it, I also want the ocean view out of my windows, especially my bedroom window, er sliding glass patio doors. Ah, my breathing is slowing down already just thinking about it. I think I'll go look for a snack.

First, there was no indication that it was a research study to stop using Cocaine so one cannot assume that meaning. The vast majority of research studies being conducted, generally state, "Are you using Cocaine and wish to stop", not just "Are you using Cocaine?" In my work in research, we do generally differentiate the two types of studies.

And as most nurses working with those in recovery are recommending people to stop, I doubt if they would be going up to patients saying, "I know that you are in the hospital and all, trying to quit or recover from what has occurred related to cocaine use, but I saw this Internet advertisement on my nursing bulletin board looking for research subjects who currently use cocaine.

For some reason, I doubt that would go over well w/ the PTB at one's local clinic/facility/hospital.

And if I nurse really wants to aid another nurse into recovery, I don't think that referring them to an internet research ad is exactly the best way to go about it. I would like to think that we have better, more appropriate resources available.

I've heard the local radio ads for users of meth and to be quite frank I find them to be a little weird, just a little. I'll bet that those people that would find the ads of interest are most attracted by the hefty little compensation package offered for participation. I would really find the ads weird if they targeted nurses in particular.

It generates revenue. I was shocked to be greeted by a Right-to-Life ad some weeks ago.
