Trigger Warning!

  • Guides

Mods : This may be in the wrong place as I have yet to figure out how to get to the break room.

I have been told at my school and facility that we are now required to give a trigger warning before we speak an opinion that may offend the sensibilities of another. Something on the lines of "I have to warn you that I am about to say something that may trigger a strong negative emotion in you!" This gives members of the intended audience the opportunity to recuse themselves from the conversation to avoid being triggered or otherwise negatively effected by what I am about to say!

IMHO political correctness is simply suppression of constitutionally protected free speech which is a basic human right in this country (USA). I am wondering how many others on this forum find this trend ridiculous. I am purposely not going into specific details or issues with this - just wondering how many of my fellows feel about this.

So you're saying that Trigger never ended up in a glue factory anywhere and couldn't possibly be the victim.

Where's the De-Friend button?

Society today glorifies being traumatized and encourages people to make their issues everyone else's problem.

Society also qualifies "trauma" as all sorts of things that... aren't really trauma. Many of the things people complain about and expect to be accommodated over are the definition of first world problems - like being accidentally misgendered or hearing an opinion they don't like. Sorry, that's not trauma.

This. 1000 times. We've lost perspective

This is quite ludicrous to read. The world is getting ridiculous.

Meanie Tricia!! Here Davey...here's a participation ribbon. Sit here in this safe space. You can pet the puppy and color in this coloring book of feelings. Put that mean Trigger out of your mind. Think pleasant thoughts like wearing your engineering boots.

I actually had a new nurse ask me yesterday if my facility had a designated safe space! :banghead:

I’d say, “yeah the whole place is pretty safe to be honest...what with all the crash carts, emergency meds, and staff...” ?

What.

Did you let him/her know that most places are still working on being able to correctly utilize the other spaces we have, like the bathroom and the "hydration station" and the break room?

What could be safer than lying in bed and ringing for stuff and someone who is forced to be pleasant has to bring it and tell you he/she has plenty of time to bring you whatever you want? The whole building is a safe space.

I actually work in a free-standing, acute (locked) psych facility - so my patients don't stay in bed a ring politely for their hot and cold running Ativan. They actually gang up at the nurses station at the same time and all ask at once!

And I want to say thank you to OldDude for remembering my engineering boots...

...I felt all warm and loved.

The boots were great, also, the insides being lined with something that reminded me of Lamb's wool.

*sigh*

these young people - LOL.....

Showing my age here & sometimes out of touch with things - I would have responded "for a tornado or bad weather? Oh that is in the med room - we would try to cram as many of the patients as we could in there"
