To study group or not to study group...

Some second year students are saying if I don't get into a study group I'll never make it out of nursing school, but I've found that I do best without study groups, the two times I tried studying with study groups I received my two lowest grades.

My technique is to make flash cards and study them along with the provided powerpoints and I maintained a B average in first semester nursing.

Do you guys believe a study group is essential? Helpful? Useless?

Welcome to the Forum, Chris :balloons: In answer to your question, each student is an individual with his or her own preferred learning styles. And, study groups, as helpful as they are for most individuals, are not for everyone. I, for one, did not find them helpful when I was in school and performed very well without them. So, do what is best for you. If you have developed a system that is working for you, stick with it :)

I don't like study groups...but that is me. I have one person that I study with on the day before the test. We study on our own then quizz each other the day before to see what areas we are weak in. Good luck to you!

You know, I have found that you have to pick wisely who you study with!! Some people depend on YOU to teach them EVERYTHING and I can't do that! I have three friends that I study with like two days before the exam--but we only quiz eachother and ask questions!! I can't read through the powerpoints with anyone else, I have to learn on my own and then ask...

I do both. I study first with my usual group, and then study on my own more in depth. :roll

Never did study groups, i don't plan on it in the future, either. It's not realistic for me, which a wacky work schedule, anyway.

The closest thing to it was me and a couple other girls in my class would make copies of our notes and give each other a copy. Different sets of notes, which might have included something that someone might have missed in class. But the ones that did this all had the same goal in mind: to do well and to get out.

i don't study with a study group either. i always study alone. i can never study at home either because i find myself doing housework or other things. the day of the test i go to school about three or four hours early and meet up with about three or four people and we quiz each other over some things we may have missed, like meds for diseases, side effects, etc. that sort of thing always kind of helps, but i am a loner when it comes to studying myself. good luck!!!! :clown:

I can't do study groups either. I've tried twice and both times my blood pressure rose- lol. Yep, I study alone 100% of the time.

this is what I do....when I tend to go to group study groups i have a hard time studying and not socializing..besides, im used to my study partner and we know eacher in and out...we get more accomplished and we have our own style!

Hello Chris welcome aboard I am nurse in school and I noticed that everyone study skills are different especially with a large group, study groups are only essential if you study with 1-3 people they must bring questions to the table and you all quizz each other because sometimes we loose focus on something being lectured in class and that other person will bring it out in the study group...but in the same token you have slackers that would rather socialize than study, they don't bring nothing to the table but off topic subjects etc... you end up teaching them what you have studied always eliminate them ASAP they will make the whole enviroment a waste of everyone's time....do what works best for you good luck!

Okay, I'll be an advocate for study groups. They work for me, but not for everyone. I also study on my own, but it helps me to talk about what we have learned. Plus, it gives us a set time weekly to come together and focus on the subject. I have the same set of three people I have studied with since quarter one, and we will be starting quarter six in January.

I also tutor and have found it very useful to have students take a CAPSOL test to determine how they learn. This has helped my tutees determine what works best for them, and it helps me as a tutor. For instance I tutor a small group, 3 people, and one student hardly speaks up while the other two constantly have questions. I know that she is an auditory learner and by simply listening she is learning the material. Another is a kinesthetic learner so we do lots of hands on and diagraming for her.

The important thing is to find out what works best for you and do it. Don't try to change just because it works for someone else.
