Statistics

I was just wondering if anyone has experienced an online statistics course? Not sure what to expect...

    I stunk at Algebra, barely made a B with a tutor. I had over a 100 average (w/extra credit) in Statistics. Loved it!

    I have a silly question. I haven't done math in college at all. I'm supposed to do that over the summer. But, I'm considering transferring anyway. The school I'm looking into wants Stats as their math. Would I be able to take this class even if I don't have any previous math classes? I can't see a math pre-req stated for the Stats so that's why I wonder. Thanks guys! (In the event that I can get away with it, I would def do it in class, not online!)

    I would think you would at least need Intermediate Algebra before you tackle Stats. You have to be comfortable solving formulas for other variables to do some of the problems. If you haven't covered that in an intermediate level algebra class, you'll probably be lost when it comes to those type of questions. You'll also need experience graphing curves and understanding how you determine the area under a curve. You'll be using a Normal curve for most of your Stat problems and will need to understand how this relates to standard deviations from the mean and how to calculate the probability of a particular value under the Normal curve. You will learn this in Stats, but understanding how you arrived at that curve & its area in the first place is important to understanding the concepts in Stats.

    Are you comfortable using complex equations to solve problems? You'll need to be able to decipher appropriate symbols such as Sigma (sum), square-roots, etc.

    I would suggest you have a solid math background before attempting Stats.

    @soprano kris: whoa! That's a lot! Last time I did anything with graphs was in HS over 20 years ago. The most formulas I have used lately were in chemistry and that's it. Maybe I need to speak to an advisor...lol. Thanks!

    LUCKILY, my school doesn't require statistics as a pre-req. I'm thankful for this because I barely passed college algebra with a C. Statistics would KILL me.

    Yup- you are! One school I applied to required two semesters of statistics.

    The only bad thing is if I don't get into the program at my current school I would have to take an extra semester to do statistics because all other surrounding schools require it -_-. If i take it now it would definitely lower my GPA so I'm just going to take a shot at only applying to one school & hope I get in!

    Speaking with an advisor is your best option. They will know exactly what level of math is expected before attempting the course. I took Stats as a business major back in the 90s and there were absolutely no pre-reqs. It wasn't a difficult course. Now that I just took Stats for Med majors, it was a completely different course and much more complex than business Stats. It had a pre-req of Algebra required and I can see why. Completely different Stats courses. Each school varies in their curriculum, so again, your advisor is your best bet!

    Which edition did you use? Mine has a pair of red sneakers on them. I tried to email the professor to ask no luck. I don't think it's the current edition maybe the one before.

    Same book, I used an older edition as well. It has the calculator stuff at the end of every section (if there's one that applies). Look for the green boxes!

    My college requires College Algebra or higher as a prereq. I can't imagine taking Stats with no prior college math at all.

    Statistics was much easier than algebra for me. If you get the right teacher you'll exceed your expectations.
