Sorry for being such a grump.
But why do people show up for work and suddenly claim they are sick when the get here after they see their assignment.
The secretary who is a nurse assistant got pulled to work the floor and suddenly had severe back pain and had to leave.
An RN did something similar as well.
No work ethic.
If you don't want to work, call in early enough so we can a replacement. :(
Thanks. :)

I wouldn't do this (I hope) but I can understand a nurse freaking over their assignment and feeling truly ill(seriously). I have witnessed this happen to nurses. They are too chicken to stand up and say NO, I will NOT take this unsafe assignment, so pleading ill is politically more correct.
I am not taking away from your right to vent though Tweetie (tweety-pie, ha ha:D )
SOme days you can't win.

I've been guilty before for trying to go to work when I don't feel so hot not wanting to leave my friends short handed. But, you truly have a gripe here and something needs to be done about that.
P.S. Tweety I got the new job. If you like nights so well they have a $5000.00 sign on bonus for a 7P-7A RN on Tele. That's a lot of cash almost made me want to go back on nights.

I am with you tweety! We have 2 nurses who do this on a regular basis and I want to smack em. It's one thing if it happens once, but once a month is a bit much....

Like you one of the other posters I have been guilty of the "I'll get better I won't take a day off only to get to work and bleuch!!!! OOOPPPSSS! Pale shaking and nearly passing out. Now days I always try to ring well ahead of time - problem is it leaves you debating - "what if this passes - then I will feel guilty?"

We had one nurse who did this all toooo frequently..glad she's gone! grrrrr..she'd stay until about 30 min before med pass was due and become "ill" and leave having not done crap..so we'd be stuck trying to do our work and catch-up hers as well...perty crappy deal...for everyone :/

Don't you guys have attendance policies where you work? If so, they need to be enforced! If not, you need them!
Sometimes, though, peole do think "I can make it" and come to work, then realize that they're sicker than they thought. If this happens frequently, that person needs to be counseled.
I also hate it when people wait until the last minute to call off- how in the heck am I supposed to get someone to replace them at the last minute? Why can't they call in early enough so at least I have time to try to replace them ??

Tweety I'll come work with ya. I wouldnt do that I have never skipped out on an assignment. I have come to work sick which I really dont think healthcare workers should do but we get penalized for calling off so I go. I do however where a mask and change it frequently so as not to make my pts or coworkers sick. And one time when I worked LTC geriatrics I did call my boss when they were going to leave me on the floor for 2 hrs on my own with no aids and 52 pts and tell them if they didnt get me someone fast it would be my last night. Other than that I am a very cooperative and team playing employee. So do ya want me? Would I make the cut?

Yeah, I love those called at 6:15.
The attendance policies are loosely enforced. But first a verbal warning, then a written warning, then another warning, then a final warning, then if you can defend a possible harrasment/discrimination charge, then perhaps that person maybe might be considered fired, unless of course you need them to work that day they happen to show up.

"Mr. Tweets" -- You've got a truly legit rant going.
"What??? That's who I'm stuck with today here??? Sorry, but I feel I'm getting majorly sick (cough, hack, cough). Think I'm contagious. Better get home before I put our vulnerable population at risk. Can't stay. See ya's!!!"
So feel free to vent to your heart's content.

Been there had it happen to me and know how infuriating it is. Especially the one RN who is notorious for it that says to the staff, "I'm not taking that assignment, screw it I will get diarrhea" and low and behold she is on the phone to the supervisor "I have diarrhea gotta go, buh, bye" and gets away with it every time. Do they honestly think that they are fooling anyone, it does seem to be a trend with NAs/Secretaries when they are asked to perform aid duties, where I work anyway.
