Scrubs or Clothes?

Published

Just curious what the majority of nurses in the school health office are wearing- scrubs, business casual, professional, lab coat?

Im torn between comfort of scrubs and not worrying about bodily fluids vs. business casual being less scary to my elementary kids (and more fashionable as I like cute (yet practical) things).

I'm in a private school for students with severe/profound disabilities and major health issues, and we are casual dress. Our students have fears of Drs so we do this in attempt to ease their fears.

I wear business casual. In my district it is a choice and different nurses wear different things. I like to dress like the rest of the faculty.

I wanted to wear a lab coat or scrubs just because I thought in an emergency I could quickly be identifiable as a medical professional but (1) my supervisor discouraged that so I did not seem too distinct from the rest of the office staff (dressing similarly to them could make us all have better teamwork) and (2) I quickly learned that people quickly figure out who you are. Also some of my preschoolers are scared enough to see "the nurse" that I'm sure wearing scrubs would make that worse. Also while I catheterize a student multiple times a day and of course occasionally am involved in other toileting, vomit, lice, etc. issues I have yet to get anything nasty on my clothing. (One near miss with a flood of vomit when I took an oral temp!)

I think it's most important to dress comfortably as there are times you have to hurry to the scene of an accident or squat, kneel, etc. to administer care! I like to look nice as well but all my clothing is stretchy and comfortable.

Scrubs. They are easy, and feel like PJ's. I prefer to look like a nurse, but I'll throw in a business casual day here and there, so no one will recognize me. I also have a few long sleeve t-shirts I will wear with my scrub pants which is my favorite!

My administration gave me the choice of what to wear, so I went with scrubs. I already had a closet full, so a no brainer there, no buying a new wardrobe! Plus they are comfy and easy to work in and clean. I like to be easily identified as the nurse to new staff and visitors. My little kids have never been afraid of me in scrubs, in fact they like when I wear my fun ones - I have a minion top, emoji top, star wars top and all kinds of holiday themes.

I would wear "fun" scrubs like dakotadenise said. Superheros, anyone??

If you have to go to a meeting where you feel like you need to be dressier, put a [clean] lab coat on. You'll feel uber professional!

Our district switched to scrubs a long time ago. Prior to that (before my time), the nurses wore the traditional whites.

I had a choice, but I LOVE wearing scrubs, so that's what i do. A lot of the other nurses in my district wear "comfortable causal" (aka jeans, nice shirt and lab coat)

Same thing I wore in the hospital. White uniform AND my cap....proudly.

I wore scrubs to the school, for the same reason I wear them to the home. Crawling around on the floor and other sundry messy situations make scrubs more practical as well as comfortable.

Usually I wear scrubs since I'm elementary and some days in January when noro hits my ninja vomit avoidance skills are duller than usual. I have my lab coat or will wear something sharper for meetings. It's harder to have recommendations given to a superintendent taken seriously when wearing Pokémon.
