Made me remember the time I had a rather bossy family member at the bedside, kinda getting in my way when I was trying do work on the patient, actually. She was fussing over this and that, and informed me that she was a nurse so she could do whatever her __ needed (aunt, I think). Anyway, it didn't take long before "nurse" turned into "nurse's aide", which turned into "home care companion" (read: keep old people company without any medical work whatsoever).

Guess if you watch enough, you think you know it all.

By now, having seen enough episodes of House, I guess I'm really darned near a brilliant surgeon. ROFL!!

First I say, "Well I guess you understand how HIPPA works?" I then proceed to explain to them I am doing my job to the best of my ability, most cases I have found these 'nurses' to be CNA's. I no longer let people intimidate me, and I never tell people I am a nurse when I go anywhere.

Had a situation the other day were the "RN" mother in law was totally sweet to my face and the patients but when she and i were out of the patients room she told me what a baby she thought the patient was being. Then the patient is crying and asking for an epidural, i tell her i will ask but it is not likely because we are just not getting anywere on this 3 day induction. Monster in law stormes out of the room and depands an epidural, dr caved. I offered to check patient several times she states no she is to sensitive from the cervadil.... Dr. informes me the mother in law has been checking pt. Guess who got an infection?

Oh. My. GOD.

I think about my ex's mother and.... shudder.

Mothers-in-law just shouldn't go there. It's a crime against nature.

Hate that! Truly dislike anyone who comes with the "do you know who I am"? attitude...UGH! Love the notebook people too! See it alot.

I have to say I have the opposite problem....currently hubby's dad is in hospital (my hospital)...I have been horrified with his treatment and the lack of assessment that is occurring. I can't help but wonder if my FIL is getting that treatment, only God knows how the others are treated.

It's a long story, but I was forced to go not only to my department manager to give the bad news of errors in ER, but had to go to ortho floor manager to give the bad news that obviously no assessments were being done, because after two days the results of his ct were missing, they kept referring to pain in his left hip, and cancelled his sitter because it was costing the hospital money. I gave them two days to fix the problem...I did not play the RN card. I should have!

Guess what? Had a RIGHT HIP FRACTURE...now must have surgery. No one until Sunday had the painful hip written in the chart correctly. No one was looking for the outstanding CT results. It took PT, to figure it out. This poor girl pulled him out of bed...and he kept saying "my right hip hurts" HER ORDER: Evaluate left hip. Can you say horrified? She was soooo upset! The nurse...could've cared less. That's when nurse crotchety stepped up...now we are on the VIP list. BIG DEAL! All I wanted was the care I provide to my patients.

I am currently composing a "safety letter" to our President. My ER and the ortho floor will be named for mistakes, and ortho for mistreatment, lack of treatment, withholding of treatment, and nurses practicing out of their scope (cancelling sitter without dr order). I get all of the VIPs in ER due to personality and work ethic...however, I treat my other patients the same way. I may not donate a million dollars, but I do take care of those who do. All I want is safe care for my family and everyone elses.

The positive...both managers reviewed the mistakes and were horrified with the results. I truly believe something will be done...at least for awhile. I am not sure we should endorse....perhaps only bad things...this would force nurses to actually check their patients head to toe and figure it out! Eight nurses supposedly assessed, one PT got it right! Something wrong with that.

Sorry this turned into a vent....but I can see if a nurse thought that her standard of care wasn't being met...the RN card would be played. In the future, I will not hesitate.

i've had those bullying types, puffing their chest out..."i'm an RN".

on a couple of occasions, i've replied with, "i'm sorry", followed by my sympathetic face.

It amazes me just how entitled people seem to feel when they come into the hospital - and common courtesy just flies out the window.

I've had that, but more often I get I've got six semesters of nursing school left (which is like, all of it ) or I work in the medical field or some other such thing like they are trying to gain some kind of newfound respect or authority.

Whatever.

luckliy the pt and her daughter have gone back home.. they can crawl back into the hole they came out of... i rarely say i am RN even when i take my mother to the dr...

I don't tell anyone at a doctors office that I am an RN. It turns people off and serves no real purpose.

I hate it when people do it to me. I feel like saying "yeah, me too!"

In the outpatient center I get patients telling me "the doctor is a good friend of mine" Okay......and your point is? Are the results of your test going to change because he/she is your good buddy? Gee when I called to ask a question, he/she was like who?

My father-in-law was recently in the hospital for surgery, in another state, and his wife (dh's stepmother) told me that he bragged that his daughter-in-law is an RN and the best one he's ever met. Thanks FIL, I think that's cute and sweet, he was bragging not trying to push anyone around.
