Restocking Code Cart: Who's Responsible?

This is a med-surg unit... had a code at around 6:45pm, lasted for almost 2hrs :crying2:... nurses were all drained, but stayed for another 2hrs to restock the cart. In your facility, which shift restocks if the cart is opened due to code?

At my facility, our central supply unit brings us a freshly stocked crash cart and they take the used one and then restock it. We don't have to restock at all.

the pharmacy.

ea. floor has four crash carts and when a code is called the pharmacy tech shows up to take the old cart and refill it so that in the event the other carts need to be opened there is a fresh one on the way.

As soon as our codes are over we call central supply who will come and exchange the cart. They are open 24 hours every day.

I work at a smaller rural hospital. In my hospital, whoever uses the cart is technically responsible, but usually if a code happens late in a shift, the next shift will volunteer to restock it, so it isn't a big deal. I def wouldn't be staying for two hours to restock it tho:-)

The same central supply comes and takes the cart replacing it with a fully stocked one. I know someone is going to ask so to answer ahead of time they go right by the pharmacy on the way to their dept and the drug draw slides out and new sealed one is slid right in.

Other places I have been the pharmacy has ownership and does the whole process.

I used to be a pharm tech. As soon as the code was through, I was resonsible for picking up the used drug tray and bringing a new one. Often times I also had to lock the cart when I was done.

Central supply. Takes the old one, replacing it with a new one.

Central supply comes up to the floor to exchange the old cart for a new one. CS and pharmacy stock the old cart and it waits until it needs to be exchanged for another.

Central supply restocks, then it goes to pharmacy to be restocked with meds. As soon as a code is called, though, central supply brings us a new cart. As far as checking the tags and checking the defibrillators, etc. we do that on night. Usually the charge nurse (we rotate charge) does the checks, but sometimes he or she assigns it to someone else.
