Fired from first hospital job
I remember in nursing school to always check the Md order and the mar before patient administration just in case orders change. It has been a while since I did med admin like this, since I am a school nurse and med pass is quite different. Lol

Introduction
Welcome to school nursing! You'll have the little snowflakes that come in because of a hangnail and you'll have ones that were playing basketball and hit their head right on the concrete! Kids are so much fun!

RN Graduate Establishes Dominance
I just meant that everyone should be treated equally. Just like the OP stated "I was never treated as a lesser equal" compared to the RNs she has worked for. I was just stating my personal previous experience as a uap which unfortunately there were some nurses that acted superior to us while there were others that treated us kindly and with respect. Like I said, she is in the supervisory role and since she is licensed she has taken over some responsibility- esp over somebody else that is unlicensed. So it's a shame that their working relationship together is not so ideal. Everyone should work as a TEAM.

My husband wakes me up!
I don't know how to help you there unless you seriously sit him down and talk with him about how important you need your sleep. I used to work 6pm-630 am not getting home until 7 then finally falling asleep around 8. My husband used to ALWAYS wake me up around 1130-12 thinking that missing lunch was such a big deal. Then I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep until 2-3 but I'd have to wake up around 4 to leave to get ready for work. (Traffic is bad in the Bay Area). It wasn't until he got a job working night shift where he started to understand how sleep deprived I was! He wouldn't even work a 12 hr shift and I would let that man sleep for 8 hrs not bother him at all for anything and once he wakes up he's the grinch. But that's when he realized and said "I don't know how you did this, maybe I should've let you sleep longer" lol ya think?!

What's on your lunch menu?
Yikes 106gm?!?!?! Are you sure? I'm just asking because my t1d got a beef burger from the school and the nutrional list they sent us the carbs said "100". We had to ask the lady who is in charge of all this and they actually labeled it totally wrong. sure does sucks.

Thanksgiving Break is Upon Us!
The one thing I get nervous about during this time is all the class parties with the diabetics wanting to eat every sugary thing they get their hands on while the teachers don't let us know until like 30 min before the party!!!! Drives me crazy! Other than that we have a week long break and I'm glad to be out! Happy thanksgiving break y'all!!!

Been thought of as the bad guy?
I've gotten yelled at by parents who "swore they turned the papers in" (dental/chdp- which I never received),who's daughters' "eyes were swollen" (no redness or swelling just slightly irritated from RUBBING THEM). Then I have teachers that send their kids with their belongings ready to go home when they have no temp at all, just seems a little "tired in class." Are you kidding me? Then when I send them back they decide to call the parent. Seriously. I know you have your masters in teaching but did you pass your nclex and get your nursing license? I think not. Let me do my job while you do yours!

Nurses with children always go home early?
I try my best to leave on time to pick up my daughter from school. I'm lucky that my job allows me to do that.

Re wrapping splints?
The whole thing was off. The wrap and the splint. I put the splint back on (which stabilized finger already) but I did not want to wrap it, which was previously wrapped in a coband-like bandage. (The mom was calling it "tape"). Elastic bandage is the same thing I feel...but yes I just did not want to wrap it because I wanted somebody knowledgeable of injury to come look at it and plus of the policy we have about wraps, esp if I have no documentation whatsoever on this poor little girls finger. Mom worked at the high school down the street. I really don't understand why she had to talk to me in that manner. Lol

YOUR Childhood School Nurse memories
I only went into the office 3x my whole school career, and that was senior high when I was dx with mono. I had a doc's note stating whenever I was tired I was free to go in and rest. it was boring and I would just return to class. LOL!

Re wrapping splints?
Of course I would not just send her on her way without doing anything, that is why I called the parent up to come reapply it. No way I would be aware of something and not do anything about it. We had applied the splint back on her finger, I just did not want to rewrap. This student also had full rom, but I still wanted somebody who was knowledgeable of her injury to come and take a look. If she came in uncomfortable, fractured and needed first aid care of course I would have done something to stabilize said finger and I still would have called parent! I understand that may be basic training for her, but the way she acted I believe was out of order. i have no problem re applying a wrap if I had an order/if it was obviously too tight or was not being kept in place. We have a policy for not using wraps - unless regards to first aid tx - and I would have informed my supervisor (which I always do, and did also with this case). This is the first time I had experienced this where a student came in with a splint off her finger, specifically said the "doctor applied it." if she was athletic director she should have known to provide proper documentation of her daughter's finger, especially if it required any limitations, how long she may have this for, etc. Thank you all for the insight!

Re wrapping splints?
I know, I know!

Re wrapping splints?
Thanks everybody for your input! I'm guessing everyone here would have rewrapped it...lol!

Re wrapping splints?
I looked deeper into the situation and apparently that "athletic director" was the former "athletic trainer" for the high school. But I am not an athletic trainer, so no, I still would have not re applied the splint. Considering the fact that the daughter told me that "her cast came off" and she told me her "doctor was the one that applied it". I'd rather have called the parent. I was also going through my districts policies on ace bandages and other wraps, and unless it was for initial tx for a "suspected fracture" we are to not use wraps or ace bandages, because it would seem as if we are diagnosing a client to have to use one. One of our CN's can't even apply one, and she's a nurse practitioner. I understand where you are coming from for what you would have done, I think the difference is that you have that training and I do not. Hence why we would have dealt with it differently. It's nice to hear another point of view. Maybe that's why she was so irritated. I still don't like how she tried to tell me how to do my job and she knows my "scope of practice." I have a license to keep, and I'm not going to lose it because I had applied a wrap wrong. If I don't have a doctors order, I won't do it. It's different from working in the hospital vs public schools. Lots of differences... My district nurse talked to her, and the mom is bringing a doctors note on Thursday. She also told me I did the right thing. Yay!

Re wrapping splints?
Exactly! These directors are not medical doctors, and do not have medical background in order to make these calls. I wasn't even mad at her yelling at me about the "tape" I was just felt a little disrespected and offended that she said she "knows my scope of practice" and goes on to try to tell me how I can do my job. She clearly does NOT know, because we wouldn't have had that conversation! Totally appalled and she lost my respect. Don't care if she's the athletic director, I have a license and I'm not going to lose it because of her!

Re wrapping splints?
Hi everybody, I work for an elementary school as one of the support nurses. today a student came in with her finger splint off wrapped in coband/some sort of elastic wrap tape. We have no documentation/doctor's note whatsoever about her having a splint. Anyways we put the splint back on her finger but I didn't not want to wrap it because of liability, plus I did not even know why or how she got this injury! I called moms work and when she came, she was super upset yelling at me. Stating that she is the "athletic director" at the high school and how she doesn't understand how I can't wrap her daughters poor finger. She also said she wraps athletes frets "all the time" and does treatment. As for as I knew, athletic directors aren't doctors? Anyways, I explained to her how she needed a doctors note, how I can't apply ace bandages or wraps. It's like a prescription. She continued to yell at me stating that "she knows my scope of practice" and what I can and cannot do. Then she continued to yell at me for keeping her daughter there and missing class. I told her she can talk to my district nurse and she threatened to "email her". I talked to my district nurse right after the incident and she was right on my side about everything, how she will talk to the parent/"athletic director" about our rules and policies. Just wondering what you guys would have done. That ended my day. Lol!

Why are LPNS so underpaid and disrespected
I work in California in the Bay Area. It's great I work for 2 different schools. I give medications to the students that have them especially those with diabetes. We deal with everything. Sending notices to classrooms if there's an outbreak (usually lice), notifying parents of missing immunizations and records, kinder registrations making sure each student at the school has everything they need regarding health concerns. If there's anything serious I always notify my credentialed nurse who deals with much more of the serious cases. I'm a mom so the school nursing is perfect since the schedule works with my daughter who is also in school. I love it! Could be very laid back but also stressful since you are the only licensed medical professional on site. Many teachers don't understand why vomiting is not as serious as a head injury. They think after a student hits their head on the cement ground, they can go back to class but if a student vomits there is something horrible wrong.uhm really? LOL

Why are LPNS so underpaid and disrespected
I work as a school support nurse. Those who know me know that I am a nurse. Many of the support nurses are LVNs or RNs, and when I started, my supervisor (the credentialed nurse) made sure to let everybody know that I am a REAL NURSE, not a health aide or health clerk. Love my position. My name tag says "licensed vocational nurse" but lay people don't know the difference between RN vs LVN. They usually just go, "you're a nurse? Cool, please asses this kid who's having a headache." Lol. You pass the NCLEX? You have your license? You're a nurse. Don't worry about others asking about your RN. You got where you are from hard work. Be proud. I worked hard for my license!

Medical Assistant - I want to be a nurse
I am a lvn but a nurse regardless. I am not a RN. I did my medical assisting first to get my foot in the door, and I learned many valuable things. I worked in an outpatient surgery center and was cross trained in both preop and post op, helping alongside the rn's. Once I got into the nursing program, I was one step ahead of a lot of my fellow classmates because I had that experience. I was able to get a job as a school nurse because a lot of my references were RNs I worked alongside with. They vouched for me. I don't see anything wrong with the steps you are taking. A lot of experience is worth it, but so is taking the time out to get the education and get your professional license. I agree with The Commuter, I know MA's that have their degrees and I also know LVNs that have their associates degree in science. Whatever you decide to do, I wish you luck!

Have you ever had a student who thinks he/she knows more than you do?
I have a smart *ass* student that thinks he has the privilege to walk into my office whenever he wants and call his mom when he says he's not feeling well (his mom subs sometimes.) he came in once with a nosebleed and said " I know how to take care of this, my dad is a nurse." Okay, then why are you in here? 🙄

Is it just me?
Today! Monday! I had about 16 students come in, all complaining of stomach aches. I literally had 9 students all at one time which I had to give a whole lecture about "if I do not have to call an ambulance, and you are talking to each other then you are clearly ok to be in class." - which at the same time I had a student with an ear infection, one that fell and HIT HIS HEAD and one with a bloody nose. All of them just staring at me. Then the ones with the stomach ache has the audacity to say "no" when I tell them to at least try to use the restroom. Then one of them goes and says "can I call my mom, she's subbing here today". Aca-Scuse me? Of course the poor boy that hit his head was the one that got to go home, all others had to stay.:). I was quite the meanie to today, but really? Did I also mention that this was the last week before winter break starts? Lol

If you feel sick the nurse will call me and you can go home
Ugh I hate that! When a child comes into my office saying they feel sick, I usually ask if their parents know and what they said. Some of them come in, totally fine and the first thing they say is "I'm not feeling good can I call my parents?" I usual assess them first and I say "let me check you out first before we bother your parents". If they seem totally capable of staying in school, I give them a little lecture about being at school and how important it is. Then I ask "what are you going to do if you go home?" If they say play video games or go to someone's house, I tell them they cannot. If I send them home then they have to rest all day because they were too sick to not be at school, and I will tell their parents as well. Then they usually change their mind and stay. LOL!

Do you enjoy being a school nurse?
I am a lvn here in the Bay Area and I work as a support nurse under what they call the credentialed nurses. The credentialed nurses are the ones that take care of the iep's, screenings, etc. I work under the credentialed nurse, which is in charge of several schools. I switch between 3 schools but I am also by myself those days. We are all nurses...some support nurses are RNs and some are lvns. But we do work under the credentialed nurse.

I hate nursing
To OP: I am an lvn and I am fairly new one. I worked at a surgery center as a medical assistant along with other nurses and I hated it. I then went back to school to become an lvn. I wanted to go back and eventually get my RN and bsn because I want to work in OB. During my clinicals, I knew for a fact I didn't want to work in a snf. Some snf's here in the Bay Area pay fairly well, but I knew I would hate it. The abuse from residents, most places are understaffed and I could just see the stress on the nurse's faces every single time I'd come in. I never wanted to deal with the stress. After I got my license, I lucked out and got a job at the school district. I have a family...an infant and a school aged child. My husband works for ucsf. It's perfect, I work part time: 4 hrs per day, and monitor children with diabetes or others that need their meds. I love kids so it's not such a problem. You get a few angry parents here and there...but nothing as stressful as the hospital. The only downside is that you are the only medical personnel on campus and a lot of the teachers freak out if a kid vomits or has a nose bleed. ANYWAYS, this was longer than I thought it was going to be...but I just wanted to express that I was able to find a job that I actually enjoyed then being stuck in a place I knew I would hate. If you're not into school nursing, I just suggest to try your best to look for a job within your profession that you can enjoy doing still. You have been an lpn for a while so I'm sure you can find some administrative position if you really wanted to...especially with the experience you have. I wish you the best of luck!

RN Graduate Establishes Dominance
Yes they would help. @vanillabean- this is what I am referring to. I did not know how to use the quote until you told me to. Thanks.
