My comments for what they are worth. I'm an ED RN in level one trauma. Oh yeah and in general I also like psych patients! there are many Ed nurses who think psych is not real or babysitting at best. You can learn to deal with this. In ten years, psych care may look different, but it's a huge problem right now with no easy answers. realize that chemical health --od's and intoxication also fall into this realm. ED deals with the worst problem which could kill or injure you. The rest is fluff and is by no means comprehensive care. We turf a lot back to the floor or primary care. In my unit, we would be bogged down if we fixed it all. you are always going to have nasty or insensitive humans including in healthcare. Doesn't mean you need to be one of them. suggestion: seek out psych ED specifically or psych observation or holding. Consider also just doing psych only unless you want the diversity of ED. ED is a tough place in general and a tougher place to start. That's your call and depends on your community-- here very few new grads are even considered for ED.

How about the SBAR? My name is xxx and I'm calling about pt so and so in room xyz. Then roll into SBAR. You clearly need to id yourself as a student.

My school where I taught did not teach students Iv insertion but did teach foleys in second semester. Foley skills are needed, IV insertion is done in many facilities by the IV team in my city. Fake arms are not like real people anyway and neither are fake bottoms for practice on foleys. But better than when I went to school and we did stuff on each other. Not in this day of hiv and hepatitis.

Do you know what nurses really do and what the job climate is like in FL? I would strongly advise you to do your homework before committing to any program. i agree with the above writers. Do the ADN or BSN. You cannot expect to work full time or even part time in any nursing program and be successful. My students were told to work not more than 10-12 hours per week. Between prep and clinicals and studying, you will be busy. For most, if you try it your way, you will guaranteed fail out. Get out there and interview nurses working in the field. Go do some volunteer work in a hospital or skilled nursing. Go get your CNA and see if you like this work also because you'll be doing a lot of it! Sounds like you aren't ready yet. Go get the financial aid lined up.

How about cutting the bottom off a styrofoam cup and using it as a funnel for the ice? The funnel touches the machine. Obviously it can be re used and get gross, but might be an alternative if ok with your policy.

I have and do splurge a little but only within what I can afford. I'm also single. Mostly I use my moonlighting money for extras. Be smart! A former friend of mine went wild her first year out of school with the hot car, clothes and travel. She also went in the hole for 50K and the resident she was dating traded her in for another doc. She declared bankruptcy at twenty four.

You can't quit with six months of time in and expect them to keep you prn. Sorry but I doubt that will work for someone so new. If you don't want to burn your bridges, give the proper notice or have a conversation with your manager. Do you want to go to another unit in the hospital? That's risky but at least they might utilize the orientation time. if not, make very sure you will love your next job because now you need to be there for a year or more. Good luck.

Level one trauma Er. 3-4:1 for anything other than stab. Stab usually 2 rn's to 1patient. All shifts

Double tourniquets and warm packs work well. In kids who don't walk, go feet. In newborns, scalps if policy allows. In ED, 18 or 20. Trauma equals two lines. Our policy is the same, two sticks and move on. Ps there is hidden vein over the fourth knuckle on the hand on everyone, but going in blind is not ideal.

In my former academic institution, a DNP would be mildly accepted for educators. We had a couple- neither tenured or on track. The tenure track strongly favored the Ph.D. The major university here would not tenure track the DNP nor the Ed.d. I think it wise to look in the academic area you want to teach in. Sorry, but if you were already employed as a nursing professor, you should know which degree would be accepted at your site so no dilemma. Also depends on tenure or not, maybe some would be happy with an assistant professor or lecturer title, but seems rather stupid and unfair. I'm advanced practice and if I went back, hands down the DNP. If I knew I wanted to teach forever, it would be the Ph.D (upper Midwest state. ) Here the Ed.d might be ok if you'd been in the field and tenured, but be careful.

pull in all your nursing contacts and ask them what their shift or floor is like. Some places will let you do a shadow shift once an offer is extended to may sure you like it before they spend the money orienting you to a job you could hate. in school, you had to have done rotations in different areas. What did you like? What were you good at? What interests you? Do some self assessment. mostly you need a job. On pinterest, there was a grid on different nursing specialities based on human contact, risk taking, change. It was meant to be funny but there were some things to think about. if all else fails, go broad with med surg.

If a CNA equals a diaper changer, who do you think does it when there is no CNA? That would be the nurse. I think the poster meant that some CNA experience would help make sure you like what you will be doing as well as experience in healthcare which may help you get into schools and with clinical. Please remember you will have plenty of time at the bedside before the msn which may or may not take you away from the bedside.

Most of the time we don't get to eat in my ER. While I don't carry anything in my pockets, we sometimes cheat at the desk. We aren't supposed to either. As a friend told me, it's a bar in the elevator on the way back from ICU. i do protein bars or granola bars. If you can have fluids, you can have a protein shake if it is water based. Otherwise I also like cheese and triscuit
