When you want to help them at home...
I have 2 sisters who are very sweet, but they have lice and fleas in their hair and roaches crawling out their back packs. It is tough especially if you know that they have a loving mom who just does not seem to think cleanliness is a priority.

I feel like I'm losing.
The one thing I hate about my job is when parents complain because they did not get a call. I think I use good judgement about calling parents. Parents these days baby their kids. If you are not throwing up, have a fever, coughing your brains out, or having an allergic reactions then go back to class and deal with it. It is called life.

Please tell me it gets better...
I am on my 5th year and my worst. I used to love my job. The kids and parents are getting worse every year. Every day I want to leave, but I am scared I will regret it. You can't beat the hours and time off. I am sick of lice and parents who want to complain about everything.

smelly kid
The guidance counselor and I work well together and we have been asked to deal with it. I just offered to make the call. I was hoping someone had a way I could gently tell mom.

His clothes are sometime dirty. The teacher who work in small groups with him have a hard time because he smells. They have sent him to me several times and I have clothes to change into and extra clothes to take home. He said he bathes daily and has all the necessary supplies. He in 4th grade and a very nice kid. It either call mom or CPS

smelly kid
So if you had to call a parent to let them know their child smells and it is probably due to the fact that there are 13 animals in the home and smokers----What would you say to the parent? Thank you!

Feeling burnt out
Going on my 5th year and I think it will be my last. I have lost patience with kids and parents. I love my schedule and being with my daughters everyday, but that it about all I enjoy about my job. I am glad I am not the only one feeling burned out.

911 Debrief
This is what I hate about being a school nurse. You are all alone to make life saving decisions. Sometimes you can't win. You did the right thing. I bet she will not forget her inhaler ever again.

Got scolded by parent today
No worries you did not mean any harm. I like to have fun with students too. I take things personally a lot especially when I did my best to keep student happy and healthy.

Bathroom Accidents/Change of Clothes
I don't call unless the student comes in often and parents have not informed me of any urological problems. When I have parent who gets upset because I did not call them over something that was not urgent, I call them every time their child comes to the clinic.

Bathroom Accidents/Change of Clothes
Next year I am sending home a note with a Ziploc bag asking them to return clothes in the bag provided. If I don't get it back and it is a habitual offender I will continue to request they provide clothing. I hope this helps.

super annoyed
Thanks for the support. I spoke with the teacher and if she feels that they need to go home and I do not agree then she is will call the parents. Otherwise, I will call the parents to let them what is going on and leave it up to them.

newsletter
I may contribute to the school newsletter, but I also considered doing my newsletter a few times a year. The newsletter would include reminders and maybe a little health education.

I would like to send out a newsletter next year at the beginning of the year and maybe a few times during the year. Is there a templet or something I can use? What do you guys use?

Bathroom Accidents/Change of Clothes
Just thought I would vent. We have a good supply of clothes from donations. We buy underwear. I ask parents to wash and return short, shirts, and pants. I have student who I gave a change of clothes to for the 19th time yesterday. I have asked mom to bring a change of clothes and I have asked her to return the clothes several times this year. If I call and tell her to come to school and bring clothes she says she can't. She has not returned a thing. Oh yeah she blames the teacher of course. 11 days to go. BTW I do help kids clean up if they are young and poopy.

Does anyone have an autistic unit at your school. I work for an elementary school. We have a small class of autistic students. The staff in the class bring me kids constantly because they do not fell good and want me to call home and have someone pick them up. The majority of the time the student has no fever, no vomiting, no runny nose, and no cough. They seem fine to me in the clinic, but once they return to class the student suddenly is crying, coughing, sneezing, or what ever. The teachers in there get annoyed because I don't feel comfortable making parents come get there kids because they are crying. Does anyone have to deal with this. My opinion is they just don't want germs in the class.. Should i treat these kids like I do the rest of the students.

Moms of school-age kids
I work in the same school as them. Same hours until middle school. They can catch the bus here at the elementary school where I work.

reminder notes
That is exactly what I have in mind. Thanks.

reminder notes
My school district policy is students need to stay home until they are fever free and no vomiting for 24 hours. I was thinking about sending home notes with sick students reminding parents about our policy. Does anyone send home notes or reminders in newsletters. I would love to see an example.
