Changing Careers at 29 - Am I Crazy?
I am 31 years old and going back to school to get my second bachelor's degree. Starting to think that I am becoming a career college student! So we're not alone, there are a lot of us who are later in life decide to go into nursing. Before we avoided it because of whatever reason, mine was because of my disability. My disabilty is hearing impaired and kidney transplant. Tommy

~~~A&P 1 (winter/spring) Club~~~
Hello everybody! I am taking a hybrid human anatomy, both on-line and in class. When I went to get my text books I was suprised it was shrink wrapped together in a "package." I got Human Anatomy by Saladin with Online Learing Center for topics covered in the text book. The second book is the Student Study, Human Anatomy, Art Book by Saladin. The third is the Human Anatomy & Physiology along with PhysioEx Online resources, cat version. Meaning we'll be dissecting cats! Meeeeow! With the text books, I got several CD's and several on-line resource that I can consult. Talk about tons of information! The online part of the class is through State University of New York Network Learning. But I am registered through the local community college. Online is where most of the course information are located, assignments, quizzes, exams and etc. The class is just the labs once a week cutting up feline animals. In addition there is an on-campus learning center where they have human models that we can take apart and practice naming different parts. So all this offically starts next Monday, 23rd! Wish me luck and I wish everyone here luck! Keep in touch! Tommy
Just a vent
Just by looking at the patient's chart would tell you whether the patient's on welfare. Usually it's right in front where the insurance information is located, private insurer, medicaid, medicare and/or self-pay. I am on medicaid/medicare because of my renal transplant/disability. I can see how easy is to just show up at ED and not worry financially how to pay for the services. I volunteer for ED once a week and we get a couple of welfare cases that would just show up with non-existance medical issue. This explains why cost of maintaining Medicaid is spiraling out of control. Whenever we come into contact with patient's such as this, being demanding, we can do the best we can. The customer is always right even if we can't provide it. Even if the customer is at fault, we have to assume that it was at the fault of the service provider. It's a dog eat dog world out there....beware.... Tommy
Would you marry your prison pen pal?
I've been a pen pal to a prisoner once before. Being that I am gay, this person in prison is also gay. At the end of the day it is not a good idea to have a relationship with convicts/ex-convicts. I've been there and done that. Being in prison is a very lonely place and any attention from the outside is big deal. Convicts would do anything to woo anyone to write to them and keep writing to them. It is fine to write each other but to develop into some sort of a relationship is not a good idea. My last advice never send money!
Full Moon
Get this, I heard that mental health workers would request off on the night of the full moon! I'll bet this is true with nurses!! Imagine where they got the word LUNA tic from? Tommy
Acceptance rates for Accelerated BSN programs?
University of Rochester SON is a private institution and VERY EXPENSIVE. I was told that starting this year and expecting next year to have low number of applicants just because of the cost of the program. However, the public university in Buffalo, same kind of program have higher number of applicants just because it cheaper! Tommy
? for part time workers
I would check with your State Insurance Department and see what the limit is to be qualified for Medicaid. It helps to check it out for those who have low or no income and are in school full-time. Disabled workers have a benefit where they can qualified for Medicaid Buy-in program but sadly this program is limited to the Social Security Administration rules. Another place to check out is your local Chamber of Commerce where they might have group health/dental insurance that you could buy into. Call the local Blue Cross and Blue Shield or the local insurance carrier for any information where you can get health insurance. Good luck with your search! Tommy
Accpeted into Nursing Program at MCC Now What?
MCC? Is that Monroe Community College? If you're in Rochester, NY MCC has contract with store at the Marketplace Mall where you can buy the scrubs, stethoscopes and etc. The books you buy would be at the bookstore. If you need amplified stethoscope, I would look for electronic stethoscopes. Most majore stethoscopes have them. University of Rochester book store has those and you can try them out. Congradulations and good luck! Tommy
Medicare Part B Premiums To Rise 13.2% Next Year
I am on Medicare because of the kidney transplant. I got the 2006 "Medicare & You" book. Some of the premium will be paid by the State because of Medicaid. However, I got a notice from Medicaid that they'll no longer pay for the part B premiums. How dumb can they be? It's much economic sense for them to pay the part B premiums than to pay 100% for medical services! Unless they want me to pay the part B premiums?? It just make your wonder how the gov't keeps running on empty?!?
Share The Weirdest Reasons Patients Push The Call Light
I've been a patient myself many times. Do feel at times uncomfortable for asking for the dummest things like ice water. What I've done was to bring a pitcher to the nurse's station and ask for ice water, just to save them a trip. There were times that I did things for my roommates, they were mostly elderly. Simple things like getting them water or warm up their plate in the microwave. I've done all that with an IV in my arm!
Is this new grad a nut or what? Opinions please !
Picture this..... Two new teachers in public school..... One teacher were told that he'll be teaching a class of gifted students when in fact the students are anything but gifted. This teacher goes in and taught the students as if they were gifted. The result? The students got away with everything from missing class, being late and so on. But the teacher wouldn't dear punish them because they were "gifted!" The other teacher were told she'll be teaching a class of troubled students when in fact, they're gifted. So the teacher goes in and treats all the students as though they're trouble makers. For every little thing like having one wrong on the test would come with harsh punishment. She must be on top of everything just to keep these students in line! those who can hear, hear!
I don't understand this profession..
Instead of calling it quits, join the professional nursing organization in your area. Be proactive in nursing and affect changes in treatment of nurses in your area. Call a meeting in your hospital with your administrators and board of directors. If this doesn't work go to another location where hopsital are designated as "magnet" hospital.
Competitiveness Grades etc
I am not what you called an "over achiever," more your average joe in terms of grades. The nursing program that I am interested in "preferred" cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Funny they required C or better grade on prerequisites and their nursing courses. Admission person explained to me that they look at everything not just GPA. However if they were to have a larger applicant pool, those with less than 3.0 GPA would be looked at last or not at all. It is helpful to have a back up plan if this doesn't work out. What I am doing is I taking the rerequisites at the community college where they have nursing program. If I can't get into the accelerated bachelor's program for non-nurses, the community college nursing program would be my back up. The community college admits people into their nursing program on point system, grades, courses taken and so on. I regret that I didn't try harder in my undergraduate courses. I was on the dean's list three time but my cumulative GPA isn't all that great. There were couple of courses that I bombed, one F and one D. If they could erase those two courses I bombed, it would bring my GPA much higher. Will see how all of this pans out! I am only trust in God for everything, He'll make a way! AMEN?! Tommy
Kicked out of LPN Program
First thing first, get better! Start looking for RN program, shoot higher, BSN! If you start at a community college, you'd be done in two years with RN then later work towards BSN. When you're in college, you can get financial aid that cover tuition, books, supplies, fees, and living expenses. This may even mean taking out student loans that don't look at your credit history. Check out this website for nurses with disability. I know that you're not "disabled" per se. But worth check it out. There's information about what to do when you have been discriminated like the case with yours. I think you have a case, it has discrimination written all over. Sorry that this happened to you. http://www.exceptionalnurse.com/ Good luck and Godspeed! Tommy
medical insurance
I have both Medicaid and Medicare due to dialysis and kidney transplant. I work part-time in order to be eligible for Medicaid buy-in program. I get SSDI (social security) as long as I don't make over certain amount from my part-time job. I am using the time now that I am healthy with strong kidney function to get my second degree in nursing. I am sorry to those who don't have insurance or those have to pay so much for insurance. I believe that health care is a right not a privlege! Check with your state insurance department and see what kind of program where you can insure yourself, the kids or the whole family have avaliable. Some of the program are tricky, some will have pre-existing clause. Usually people with pre-existing are required to apply to Medicaid with a "spend-down." Good luck to everyone here with their struggles with health care. -T
Volunteering in the E.R.
I am starting the volunteer work in the E.D. (Emergency Department) next week and I'm looking forward to it! It's 4 hours a week and I picked Saturday night. Wanted to be in when it is busy. What I'll be doing is to be a "greeter" and direct patients to the triage room. Also there are other duties as well.
