Look, Ma, no diaper!
Looks like the parent is training themself, not the child. I think this mother's version of attachment parenting is to attach a potty to the kids bum from birth on. ITA witwh Dr. Brazelton's comments on this. The payoff for me was the pics in the Globe of Mom tossing the urine down her sink!!! YUUUUUCK!

Want to work <4 wk strike contract - Help!
Great pay, and I personally don't think it's 'scab' work because 1. The nurses that DO strike don't really want patients not to be cared for and 2. Strike nurses bleed corporate accounts to the bone and I believe bring them back to the table much quicker. ~faith, Timothy,. :angryfire That is NOT the way nurses in my hospital would reguard a scab. :angryfire And if you cross the picket line that is exactly what you are--a scab.

Evercare Choice health plan question.
My 95 yo Dad is in A LTC facility after breaking his hip and running through his 100 Medicare days. We are now self pay. He hopes to eventually go home with help, but he lives alone and it appears at this point, unlikely this will happen. He sometimes verbalizes that he might not be able to go home, but does not fully accept it. He refuses PT most days and also some meds. He has a tendon deep decubitus on his heel--he refused to wear booties etc. and is going to a wound clinic at a nearby hospital for tx every 2 weeks. Since he does not follow their instructions this might end soon. He is cranky and abusive to staff and my husband and I. (I find this SO HARD to deal with as an RN. and only child.) I have been given a brochure from Evercare Choice health plan. It would mean a switch from his traditional indemnity plan, which pays very little but that is free to him from his company and also includes dental and RX's. He would loose these benefits. Do any of you have experience with Evercare?? The nurse on his unit spoke very highly of it

Michael Shaivo has been made out to be the devil incarnate by many but I have no respect for the Schindlers. Mama can't visit Terri anymore--so overcome. Daddy is setting the hospice movement back many years with his comments. Now they are selling names of supporters. She's probably thinking--Dear God, could you please make those protesters be quiet and let me die in peace"! I am sure that is what the other families and patients at that hospice are thinking. Her family asked them to LEAVE! They've even had to close an elementary school across the street because of this circus.

Where are you bleeding hearts on this issue? I totally agree with you, Unewmeb4! The banging drum all night, the chanting and wailing and now a bag piper. These"protesters" have no respect for Terri or any of the other hospice patients and families. Terri is just a bandwagon that they have attached themselves to in order to advance their cause. God help us all

Neonate heel pricks for screening
The mother/baby or nursery nurse draws the blood on all babes. It's been that way for 28 years. After all the babes we've tested we would be much more of an expert than a phlebotomist. And the tests are done on a more timely basis.

Calling family after surgery
Welll Granny7, I wish we had gone to your hospital. Would you consider going to Burlington, MA to Leahy Medical Center and giving them lessons on how things should be done??

Calling family after surgery
I've been a nurse since 1978. This is a new one on me. My 95 year old Dad fell and broke his hip Saturday. He was taken to the OR at 1:30PM yesterday. The Surgical Resident told us it would take 2-3 hours at best--Plate and srews going in--and they had my # to call when the surgery was over. I called Dad's floor at 5:30 to find out when they took him down as I was getting very nervous. Finally at 7:30 I called the PACU. The nurse there said Dad was with her and asked hasn't anyone called you yet? She paged the Surgeon and while she had me on hold for his page his call went to my answering machine--I have call waiting --so all I heard was "Your father did well." My question is: All the times I've assisted in OB surgery and all the times family members have had surgery, the doc calls immediatly after the procedure. I'm a bit pissed. How should I approach this MD so that I can help him avoid putting another family through this wait?

66 YO Woman Gives Birth
As a 66 year old who is very active and healthy I can tell you that when my daughter comes for my 16 month old grandaughter after a day of babysitting I am more than ready to say "bye-bye". I am exhausted! I am VERY happy that I had all my children before I was thirty and had the enthusiasm and energy to indulge them as a child deserves to be indulged. My creaky bones and need for a full nights sleep would certainly detract from all the things I could do with my kids in my younger days. I think Mother Nature had a plan for us and we shouldn't be messing with it. There's a reason for menopause!! I'm not judging this woman--I just can't in my wildest dreams imagine havinig a baby at my age.

Forcing nurses to work as aides
When we had clinical we all had pts. that needed transfers, showers, hoyer lifting etc. Did you not learn any of this back then? Does your floor not have inservices to show you how to use new equipment? As a nurse I have had to perform these duties myself many times. Our aide couldn't do everything, That being said, if the hospital is using you as an aide, as mine does when they float us off unit, if anything happens on your shift to your pt. the BON and therefore a jury, will hold you accountable as an RN. So you do need to get this matter straigtened out with your employer. It is your liscense and your livelihood.

Old Ladies Having Babies
I would NEVER NEVER NEVER want to deal with a teenager when I was in my 70's!!!! :uhoh21: I don't believe---as an OB nurse--that these 55 plus yo mothers think about dealng with this child as the child gets older. They just think of fulfilling thier biological destiny and holding and cuddling an infant.

Obesity in the hospital
Years ago I had a 400 lb. patient who burst a AAA. The fact that she was obese saved her according to her doc. The fat helped seal the tear until they brought her in--she had a lengthy recovery with every complication in the book. The residents, med students, nursing students and the rest of the staff had to assist with moving her and getting her OOB. My first back injury

But I'm Pregnant . . . . .
I totally agree. Avoiding X-Rays and highly infectious patients is a given, but if you can't perform the other duties of your job description go on maternity leave. What happened to the war cry of the feminists and natural childbirth advocates--Pregnancy is a natural state and should not be viewed by the medical establishment as an illness. Sounds like these people are divas!

Is anyone else leery of posting?
I am not leery, but after one of the nurses here left a few years back because her co-workers reported things she wrote here, I make sure I am not specific. I cannot understand why people would post their e-mail addy's and personal web page and put their picture as their avatar and then bytch about their co-workers and work place. This is NOt a secure, private nursing board. Anyone including your co-workers and patients could utilize this site.

I Hate Pp!
Some of us like a fast paced environment and some of us like the teaching and slower pace of PP. It sounds like you ARE on a "sucky" floor. Now if I was orienting you I think some of my passion for my job would rub off on you. At least I would give you a real orientation and we would also enjoy ourselves. It truly stinks that the tech is going to show you the things the nurses are neglecting to do. Glad I don't work there!!! Give the Nurse Manager an earful. These queens are not doing their job!!! :angryfire They give PP nurses a really bad rep!!!
