D50 rectal?
We have Glucagon we can give IM or SQ if a pt is unconscious with a low blood sugar and no IV site. We also have the gel for an alert pt with no IV access. The nice thing about all this is that we have the protocol to treat the low blood sugar with any of these routes including IV D50, and *then* call the physician. In fact, they expect this.

What's Your Best Nursing Ghost Story?
We have an empty unit in our hospital currently. It still has supplies on it, so we go up there occasionally (actually daily) to snag some when we are out of something, especially on nights. One nurse went a-borrowing up there and saw a call-light on. It lit quite the fire under her tush, and she came right down again freaked out. I was tempted to go up there and cruise the halls but chickened out since no one wanted to accompany me.

Strange things found on (or in) a pt.
Yup, I agree. Too bad it got written off.

Funny dreams about your job as a nurse
yesterday I had a dream that I was planning to call in due to a migraine but couldn't seem to get my cell phone dialed to the hospital's staffing office, or the supervisor's number

Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.
Would you quit being such a #$%&@ to everyone who comes within 5 feet of your mother's room? Every single @#$% time she's admitted you have to make a complete #$% of yourself by being so demanding and rude and downright impossible and mean. If there is so much #$%& you dislike about this hospital and our care, then why the @#$% do you keep bringing her back here? Go away! Stop making nurses cry. And don't think I've forgotten that I used to go to your church. Do they all know you act this way? Get that fake smile off your face before I smack it off, #$%&@

That's the million dollar question that I am so sick of answering. Or rather, trying to explain to patients and family members that I don't know exactly what time doctors make their rounds, or what patients they see first. It's as if I carry a crystal ball and am able to tell them the exact time the doc is gonna round on them.

I want an honest opinion of this crap
baloney kaka is what it sounds like, crap right out of a bull's #$%! what the heck? I wonder how many staff will quit now. Mad cuz she didn't get tpa? Hello! It was a TIA! Sounds like the only neurological deficit she has is a major lack of common sense! People like her and her husband are a waste of oxygen. :spbox:

I did something that now makes me think I was acting like a druggie/doper/thief...
I'd'a done the same thing. I don't take well to having my personal space invaded. The only time I take kindly to someone getting in my scrub pockets is when I have sterile gloves or contaminated gloves on and my phone needs answering or someone needs my keys.

No, the internal med doc in-house is not going to let you go outside and smoke, even if it is just one cigarette. I'm not going to drop everything I'm trying to do for my 5 other patients with serious health issues to ask him if you can. I ALREADY KNOW he is going to say no. I don't care if you are 18, and that makes you an adult, every pt up here is an adult and none of them can go smoke. If you smoke in your room, the smoke would choke the very ill guy next door with a trach. If you try to force your way downstairs, we will call an emergency code for security and we'll tie your #$% down. Now shut up and quit yer whinin' before I beat the tar out of you 'cuz I have a patient bradying down who actually needs me, ya little @#$%&. :angryfire can ya tell i had a lovely shift last night?

Snotty Physicians Office Receptionist
Last year when I came in for a yearly, the receptionist loudly exclaimed "since you're here for a pap smear, I need you to fill this paperwork out". Gee, thanks, $%#&, I really wanted to tell the rest of the semi-crowded waiting room that I get to put my feet in the stirrups and have a doctor look at my crotch! :icon_roll

It's Hard to Live with a Nurse because....
My favorite way to deal with a cousins squabble at an extended family get-together isn't to try to sort out who did what, as my sis in law and bro in law tend to do. I poke my head in, be sure everyone's breathing, and tell them to call me if there's blood, a lot of it. My oldest daughter seems to always bump into something or stub her toe or whatever every time she gets upset, and then sits and mopes and cries until she gets sympathy. She gets a glance over, and a "you're fine, quit being a drama queen".

Pain is subjective?
:deadhorse Pain is what the patient says it is. Period.
