Regular Ed. The plan is to keep the student in regular Ed but with an IEP. With a 1:1 nurse.

Thank you all! We had a meeting today with parent/student, administration, his/her teachers, and some of the support staff. I found that state guidelines require a 1:1 nurse at all times and I will check his/her go bag (trach emergency kit) routinely. The decision we came to is that the student will be homebound these last few weeks of school and we will be working on his/her transition to school for the next school year by getting orders, proper staff training, IHP and IEP, AND the 1:1 nurse. In the mean time I had the parent sign a medical release, gave her the specialized procedure forms and, diet order form to get completed.

What are things that need to be in place BEFORE he/she returns?? -CFST meeting? -Medical release of info (for communication with the doctor) -Orders signed by the doctor for special procedures -Diet order -EAP/IHP -Staff training -504 plan -Emergency equipment for student (extra trach, ambulance bag for trach, etc.) that stays with the student. -A qualified full time nurse or resp therapist to assist him/her at school and classes. Do they need a nurse or therapist to follow them at school? I would think so. -communication board/laptop (student is now nonverbal) These are the things that I thought of while brain storming. I've taken care of patients in the hospital with new trachs and feeding tubes but not the school setting. Also it's only been two weeks since he/she received the trach/tube. It seems too soon for him/her to return in my opinion. I think the student should be homebound the rest of the school year to recover (geez we only have 5 weeks left). Please help me! If anyone has a student with a trach and/or feeding tube..tell me how you care for the student in the school setting. What is your routine? Do they have 1 on 1 care at school...a personal nurse? Also can someone send/ upload an IHP for feeding tubes and trachs. Thanks soooooooo much in advance!

Work at a high school with 1600 students....... I also give out ice freely unless they start coming multiple times a day everyday. I fill a small cooler with ice every morning from the cafeteria and use small zip lock baggies. I usually wrap the bag in a paper towel so there isn't too much direct contact with the skin. I call the kids ice addicts lol!

Experience will definitely help you as a school nurse. You are ALONE so there is no preceptor or charge nurse to constantly nag with questions. There are many experiences at the bedside (hospital and LTC) that are helping me now as a school nurse. Even with experience it took me a full school year to get my "rhythm". So in my opinion do a year or two in the hospital to gain skills.

Shituation lol! But yes there needs to be a team meeting for this child with a lot of therapy. Does he wear disposable briefs or pull-ups in the meantime?

Thankyou so much. I had already printed this out because it was almost the only resource I found online. Lets me know I was searching in the right direction. I think I will share this with each teacher and work on creating an IHP from scratch. It broke my heart when I found out the student was diagnosed with MS.

I love the fact that I'm getting paid now on the "M" level or Master's degree level without the Master's Degree. But if I had a Master's Degree without the certification I wouldn't get paid for it. That's what sucks! 👎👀

I recommend the school nurse cert review book sold by NASN but you can get it on amazon etc. I had some flash cards that I bought off amazon and a a practice test question app on my phone. I prepped for about 3 months.

Our last day which was a half day was 12/18 and we go back 01/04! 🙌

A lot of teachers want me to "diagnose" them before they go to the doctor! I say legally I can't but I can give you my opinion and opinion only...what it possibly could be! Just go to the dang doctor will you? I'm not a clinic (silently thinking)!

Just wanted to share that I passed this long 4 hour 250 question exam on the first try! To me if was just as difficult or even harder than the NCLEX. It is required in NC that we obtain certification within 3 years of hire. On the plus side, new letters behind my name and a substantial pay increase! I'm ecstatic! Yippee Yay!

High school 1700 kids to One Nurse. No aide no secretary. We are advocating for our lead nurse to be the second nurse at our school. We have some elementary schools that are closing.

This is my second year as a school nurse and the first year was hard but it is getting easier. The hardest thing is you don't know what hat you will wear from day to day. Stick it out and give it some more time 👍.

Yes! Lock the med cabinet!!!!!! She should not be plundering around in the cabinet without permission. I have people that have access to my office just in case I'm not present. BUT only 4 designated people are trained to give meds out of my locked cabinet if I'm not on campus in my office.

I have a 10th grader that pumps everyday at 1pm and I store her bottles in the fridge until the end of the school day. Anyone else have or had to do this????!!! I put a sign on my door until she finishes for privacy.
