  1. Thanks, although I have to work lol I'm glad you are able to focus on school. Congrats on your journey NP.
  2. Hello, I'm debating to apply for night shift in med surgical county hospital. I currently work in a detention center day shift. My goal is to start NP sept 2014, and reading allnurses most clinicals are done day shift. My job is stressful and last time I worked med surg was 5 years ago. I'm also thinking returning to inpatient will help me after graduation, my goal is to work FNP and possible urgent care. My background consist 17 yrs RN, 10 yrs per diem med surg, outpatient clinics/specialty. Oncology, hospice, hi-tech IV HH, assisting living and correctional. Please help need opinions of current NP students or graduates. Thank you.BTW this will be a transfer position not loosing my senority of 14yrs.
  3. Cajun, do you work? May I ask your GPA?. Congrats, you will excel, I'm just worried about the cost, but I know it's worth it.
  4. Enuf- What an inspiration. I was 21 when I graduated ADN, 38 graduated BSN and will be 40 next year will start my msn.
  5. Sinah, you are obligated to report this to the state. You can do this anonymous. It's the law, and ethical.
  6. Don't feel bad, i quit via text, yes via text. I was working per diem at a senior care and I had poor orientation, then they started accepting patients that belong in nursing homes and expected one nurse to take care of 30 plus patients who where falling everyday. On top of that they don't hire cna's. One day my boss text me upset that I didn't do something he wasn't even a nurse, at that point I had enough. Someone lost the documents and I was responsible, oh no I text him I officially resign. If you ever feel your license is in jeopardy you only have to do whats right.
  7. Op: let me tell you about the real rude patients lol. I work in correctional nursing and you get call from a-z foul language, on top of that they are juveniles. I try to understand their frustration but if they are hostile I informed them I will give you time to calm down I will come back. However there are juveniles that know the system and I had a very rude resident, he was very demanding and will get in your face, he would not listen to anyone so one day I started singing Amazing grace while he was talking and then it work, omg I found the one thing that he can stop talking and listen. He recently was released and return and now he raises his hand and ask me permission to approach me, wow I'm so happy with his behavior and I always acknowledge his calm behavior.
  8. Start your assignment ASAP for NR 451, not hard just the research project was time consuming.
  9. If you are not sure then go agency. Why didn't you like med surg? It sounds like you are looking for a low patient ratio. Why don't you try ER it's a mixture.
  10. I can tell you that when I first started I failed my LPN entrance exam!!!!! That gave me the drive to obtained my RN then BSN. I've been an rn for 18 years and I'm glad that I failed the LPN entrance exam. Lol bottom line yes you will be a fool to quit rn.
  11. She needs to volunteer hospital or clinics to know if this is what she wants to do. Do not force her if she doesn't want to be a nurse. She can also go into biology or chemistry / public health/ health educator, genetics, nutritionist, etc
  12. Don't beat yourself up. Most hospital have protocols of abnormal labs be called in by the lab to a RN, does your hospital have this? If so and they did not follow this write an incident report. Also during report ask if any labs pending write it in red marker this will remind you to follow up. I've been there mean nurses I would cry and I vowed not to do this in the future. I've been a nurse for 18 years and we still forget to check up in things. But we learn and move on. Don't let this intimidate you everyone makes mistakes.
  13. Dietary aide can be passing the trays picking them up, passing the menu, cleaning the kitchen, or assisting the residents. If you are planning to go into nursing then nursing home job would be a better option for you also nursing schools want to see what have you done prior to applying for school. Nursing home will give you an insight of what really goes on, it would be a good exp.
  14. What are your job hunting skills? Look internet career builder/monster/ or agency. What about usajobs which is federal employment like army/navy based also federal prison I just searched and they are hiring in Honolulu. Good luck don't give up.
  15. Omg I've been a nurse for 14 yrs med surg float clinic correctional setting etc. but when I was hired at assisted living prn it took me forever to pass. Meds on 35 patients. Yes forever!!!! I would have to find the patients then crush medicine then tell them how much they needed their meds I loved it but sadly I left due to many residents falling and breaking bones I was afraid for my license. Anyway I found out those nurses that were done early did not give all meds at the same time or they will skip and give them lunch time. But what helped me was when I got to know the patients who will b up first, diabetics, those on oxygen. When you start your shift look at the orders if possible then always double check your order but never rush never that's when u make mistakes. It's going to take time but you will find your own way trust me.
  16. Yes you can give lantus insulin to a patient who is npo what was the insulin. You can hold a medicine based on judgement but you have to call md and get an official order to hold it is against the law negligence if you don't get an order. Next time follow chain of command your charge nurse then nurse manager etc.
  17. Mightynurse, you have to slow down. Don't trust anyone, they were probably jealous as you are creative like me lol. I have found out that people don't like when you have great ideas. Advance your degree. I was fired from a job when I was 7 months pregnant!!!!!!!! I lost health insurance and ended up delivering at a county hospital. I worked agency up until my due date, my boyfriend was unemployed. And the reason I got fired for refusing to give a bed bad to a hospice patient which I ask for a cna to visit the patient. I was afraid of getting hurt as I was 7 mos pregnant. After my son was born a year later I found my job and I'm still working here 14 yrs. it has also come to make a change and I'm pursuing FNP by fall 2014. So when one door closes another opens. For your next employment be honest you were not giving any support from coworkers. Nursing is team effort. When one door closes another opens. See it as a life experience and not as a mistake. You sound like a good nurse, you will be fine.
  18. Hrsa.gov or type nurse repayment loan
  19. Congrats Tasha, I've been following your posts. I've been thinking about Simmons FNP. Can you pm when you can.
  20. I also called them out write an incident report and refer them to mental health so there is enough documentation of their behavior.
  21. I'm not FNP, I'm BSN- RN I work with high risk sexual behavior teens. juvenile detention center. When we do initial screening at intake these questions are ask to all juveniles. Maybe your clinic can have a sheet with questions about substance a use and sex. It can be done initially by nursing then you can reviewed it providing privacy. You should always have a chaperone if you are a female provider with male patient. Don't you have to document tanner stage?
  22. Welcome to nursing!!!!!! Get ready for a roller coaster. It's a shame that we as nurses make our job more difficult. You did the right thing.however everyone makes mistakes so be careful.
  23. Hire a lawyer that can appeal your case to the school. There are lawyers out there!!
