  1. AMEN! here's a novel concept.. fill out the consent with the patient WHEN THEY TALK TO THE PATIENT about the procedure..
  2. Thank you all for your support... to answer a couple of the posts here... DNR CC do get blood apparently so they do not bleed out. This is what the doctor wanted... and our lab ... do not even get me started... they do not call on all the labs.. but they can be guaranteed to call us on elevated BUN/Creatinine levels on HDU patients... I AM NOT saying this is all the labs fault but dang it that was pretty freaking low. Again.. thank you so much for your comments... I have been out of work since that night due to jury duty... believe you me I was STALKING the lab results..
  3. Hello fellow nurses, I am a new nurse and I made a big mistake last night... my DNR CC patient who I have (probably had) an awesome rapport with her and her family.. had some labs that I just forgot to check.. well she had hgb of 6.1... 6.1! how could I miss this?? so the nurse who I gave report to (who is never nice to me but that is not the point) was of course bitter towards me and rightly so.. doctor of course was furious and rightly so.. 7 hours after the fact... and close to midnight we are getting units of blood and consents signed I work on a floor of sharks... I can't speak to them about this... I of course began crying pretty much on the spot (I really hate working with women for this reason) .. why does it always feel like when you oversee something, you are all alone? I am just putting this out there... I realize that most of the people who read this will be women and I hope you know what I mean when I made the women comment above.. I am working so hard to keep all my patient information together here.. I know that 4 patients for me is more than enough to manage... I am in AWE of the night shift who sometimes take on 6.. let alone a charge nurse who has a whole floor to contend with.. and I thought I was making progress but this whole situation is making me take a long hard look at the decision I made... yes we all make mistakes but this??? I am being super vulnerable .. I have been up all night, I am one raw nerve here I do not want to go back for fear of all kinds of judgement.. legal, the family, co workers... all of it. If you have read this far, thanks for letting me vent this... If you are judging me... don't blame you but know I can't get any lower than I feel right now. What do I hope to gain by this? tell me I 'll get better with time .. tell me I am full of sh...and just give it up? I don't know.. just hurting here
  4. I too am a new nurse and I feel the same way girlfriend.. been out of orientation since mid July and somedays I feel like total amateur night... been yelled at by docs and eye rolled by coworkers... we gotta be there for each other...
  5. Thank you for the advice...this is sooo helpful
  6. Hello fellow RN's! bare with me a bit.. taking the scenic route .. look kids Parliament.. Big Ben I am new nurse, just got my ASN in December 2012 and after months of searching and over 80 resumes, got only 4 interviews.. one interview was for a new graduate position... I didn't get the job because... wait for it.... wait for it... I was told I didn't have enough experience!!! Welcome to the job market in the 21st century right... I am now currently working on a telemetry unit and I am about to finish my orientation.. that alone is scary.. I want to work in hematology/oncology.. I have always worked with adults but I think I would like to work in peds.. I am interested in relocating.. I live in Ohio but am looking at Nashville or Louisville.. that way I can be close to home somewhat for family.. I can not move if I don't have a job.. no trust fund baby here.. 1.Do you even attempt to apply for a job if you don't have a license in that state? Or 2.Do I go ahead and apply for a license .. but why fork out the dough for a license if I am not going to get the job? 3. If I do apply, what is the best way to explain this in my cover letter... I worry cause what little nursing experience I have is not hem/onc.. I will be immediately discounted... my current job was the only offer I got despite working in medicine for 15 years in the primary care setting.. I felt I had to take it in order to get SOME nursing experience. I know I am asking a lot here.. thanks in advance for lasting this long.
  7. I have done some medical missions... my question to you would be where do you feel God is calling you to? I have been to South Africa on medical missions with my church.. it is WHY I became a nurse. I have friends who have done work with Amigos for Christ in South America and have LOVED it as well. I wish you all the best all the same..
  8. you guys are scaring me with this talk.. I graduated in December 2012 with my ADN... got my license jan 14th.. and I can not even get a call back.. I have worked for doctors for 15 years.. my current doc for 10.. my classmates with little to no medical experience have jobs.. I FULLY intend to continue my education but I need some $$$ and experience first. Maybe find a hospital who wants to help PAY for the required BSN.. Everyone wants experience but no one wants to give it. Sorry for the rant.. I am just beyond frustrated with this experience. Had my first interview in 10 years.. called to follow up and was chastised by HR for not waiting for the email... What gives?
  9. I am beginning to feel this too.. I have worked in internal medicine as a medical assistant or 13 years and have gone to school part time for the past 6 years ( someone has to pay the bills right?), getting my pre reqs and I m finally nearly at the end of my ADN and am FREAKING .. but my grades are not that good.. this being the worst semester I have ever had grade wise.. I am holding on to that" you don't feel like a nurse till you have a year's experience" thing.. I am holding all you seasoned nurses to that! :loveya:
  10. Mallory I am not going to sugar coat it.. it is hard.. I am in a 2year program .. back to school again after a long absence .. I should be sleeping right now but something pulled me to this site tonight and in particular your post.. I TOTALLY GET WHAT YOU ARE SAYING!.. not caps for shouting but for emphasis.. i am barely passing this semester.. but I will press on.. YOU CAN DO THIS!!! I say this for your benefit as well as my own and anyone who may read this We have got to stick together.. if I can be of any help, support feel free to look me up here.. I gotta get some sleep for clinical tomorrow He who called you will see you through to the end.. you are more than a conqueror!
  11. Thank you to all who have posted! I know I can do this.. I just need to believe it.. old dog new trick here!
  12. Ilove that Eleanor roosevelt quote.. THANKS SOO Much for the info! and once I complete studying for this test I plan on looking at these! means the word to me that some nurses still want to help.. in clinical alone it has not always been the case.. When I am a nurse.. I vow to NOT be that nurse .. I will not succumb to the addage " the only profession where the old eat their young"
  13. professional help! :bugeyes:If any of you knew me you would know how true that is.. This may be taken as " asking someone to do this for me" but I am willing to ask it anyway.. I need a good head to toe breakdown.. I find I get flustered and forget to do some of the basics.. I tried to organize a cheat sheet of sorts but I still forget things. I am so focused on getting the paperwork that is due I forget to do basic things like cap refill and peripheral pulses .. YIKES Does anyone have a good guide they use on the floor to keep it together? if I have offended anyone I apologize ..
  14. I am sorry you are feeling that way and are going through this... I am still in nursing school.. for now but I don't feel like you have enough time to really wrap your mind around what you were just trained to do .. you whirlwind through school and still the expectation is that you know everything? what happened to on the job training? but of course no one wants to be bothered with training a newbie properly.. heck the nurses on most of the floors I do clinical on can't be bothered which I get.. TOTALLY but how is one to learn? This is my last thing before bed..got a 60% percent on my test today.. a first for me:(.. 1st day of OB rotation tomorrow.. your letter touched me .. lets agree both of us to stay positive.. God brought us this far right?
  15. Hello fellow nursing students! While this maybe the "sneaky way" to get some encouragement from someone you don't know.. I am just that desperate and I don't care.. I am in a 2 year program. I am 4 weeks in to this semester with one more to go.. I feel soooo inadequate.. does anyone .. anyone else feel this way? I am 37 and went back to school to further my education. I continue to work as a Medical Assistant and have been for the past 13 years. The adaptations, adjustments, skill set while somewhat similar really isn't.. I feel like an old dog trying to learn a new trick. woof woof.. no tail wag.. cock head to the side and look confused.. I know a lot of nurses and they assure me this is normal.. but I want to hear from those in the trenches with me.. my last semester almost did me in.. the professor I had was not encouraging or even that helpful. .. I know preparing for real life experience. Maybe I am kvetching/whining/complaining.. maybe it's lack of confidence, maybe I feel too old ( see previous woof woof comment) .. my grades aren't horrible for working and going to school.. A classmate of mine and I were discussing this over lunch.. and I tend to agree with her.. if it came down to it today.. I am not sure I feel equipped to save a life.. I am not afraid of hard work.. my biggest goal in life is to be a blessing and not a burden.. love helping people.. going to school to have a greater skill set to take to the mission field.. DOES ANYONE ELSE FEEL THIS WAY? HOW DO YOU HOLD ON THAT YOU KNOW THIS RIGHT? This is the part where you insert comments of a happy, uplifting nature ( I hope..) Thanks in advance for your encouragement..
