2 questions for school nurses.
I work in a small elementary school. In my district the office deals with immunizations. I only give meds and take care of sick or injured kids. The pay is awful, but it is worth the time I now to spend with my young children. I actually learn alot each year. I see about 20-40 kids a day. I document alot. I work 7:45-3:30pm No overtime. Don't worry about getting lice. I communicate alot with parents. The only 2 things I don't like is the staff think I should know everything related to medicine because I am a nurse. I am often asked to diagnos their symptoms. I also don't like the face that in case of a medical emergency it's only me. I don't have other nurses or Dr's available to help. I enjoy my job. I worked at a large medical clinic before school nursing and I don't miss that because of all the changes with Obama care.

staff illnes
I do feel awful for her. It is not controlled she has tried several Dr's and nothing seems to help. Many people have encouraged her to stay home when she does not feel well. We (her co-workers) can tell when she is not doing well and we beg her to stay seated, she will get up and fall down to the ground. O well she has been out since last week and may not come back this year. If you have any suggestions or resources I can give her please let me know.

Thanks guys. I have called EMS 2-3 times. She does get sent home each time, but it always takes awhile for someone to come get her. Maybe if I call EMS each time she will think twice before coming to work. Thanks again.

staff illnes
There is a teacher at my school who suffers from POTS. It cause her to loose conciousness. It alway happens in the morning. I get stuck dealing with her. Long story short I guess there is not much my principal can do. This can be prevented if she would just stay home when she is not feeling well. It is hard on everyone. I am here for the students, not for the staff. I feel this needs to stop, but I am not sure what to do. Everyone has suggested to her disabilty or leave of absence. Any suggestions. I am over it. Does anyone else have to deal with taking care of a staff member?

Conflicted about job, help!
My daughter attends the elementary school I work for and my younger daughter will be starting soon. I can't tell you how much I enjoy having the same schedule as her. I also love the fact that I know her friends, her friends parents, and the teachers. You may miss out on valuable experiences by leaving the hospital and make LESS money. It was a hard decision for me, but I am glad I did it. Oh yeah, having summers off rocks.

I use the PE centrail bulletin boards website. They have alot of good ideas for health bulletin boards. Choosemyplate.gov is a good nutrition website to use for ideas and freebies.

Being a nurse who likes working alone?
I am school nurse. I work by myself. I do deal with parents and teachers, but when it come to taking care of the kids it is just me.

Please Share! New school nurse looking for tips, hints, and other helpful info!
Kids mostly want TLC so anything will help them feel better. I use ice pack for everthing it seems like. I started using baking soda on wasp stings and it seems to really help.
