True! I work LTC and I have take care of a few residents that get very angry and insist that we call the doctor and tell him that the resident needs a shot of rocephin for his runny nose. I have tried and tried to argue the fact that a cold doesn't require a shot and that if they ever truly needed the drug it may not work. Still the resident insists, yelling at staff to "call the doctor and get me a shot!" I had one man that took a shot of rocephin every couple of months when he got a runny nose. I absolutely agree because this is what a lot of local factory workers make. Unfortunately, it is also what nurses are paid in my area. Sad but true. I hope when I complete RN school that I can relocate. The pay is so ridiculous and there's not a lot of opportunity for good experience in the area unless you do agency work and travel a good distance. :-( Sent from my iPhone using allnurses. I work LTC and have been an LPN 20 years. This is in KY. Base pay is $12/hr for new grads. I make only $16.35/hr. I got $0.50 for every 5 years experience which is $2. There's a $0.50/hr shift diff for 2nd shift and $1/hr night shift. We haven't had a raise in years but when I started there I got a couple raises. I have poor pay considering I have so much experience but that's how it is in this area. I know a doctors office that starts LPN's out at $9/hr. which is crazy! This low pay is a small part of the reason I'm back in school. Of course in my area CNA's only make minimum wage and CMA's start at barely over minimum wage. Sent from my iPhone using allnurses. I'm not deciding over 1 person. I said that after hearing from others, not only on here, that I was thinking about putting it off and that the question I really had was is it all worth it? Is the pain better after the recovery period? I have talked to many people and reading here as well (which was the last thing I done) I have probably heard 20+ stories. Oh my! I was thinking about having this done myself because my bunions are horrible, especially on my right foot. After hearing about the pain after surgery and how long recovery is, (not only here but from others I've known that had it done), then I'm not so sure I should do it any time soon. They are painful now and sometimes after I have a couple days work, of 12 hr shifts that have turned in to 16 hr shifts, I barely can walk. I'm just not sure it's worth it. Your situation sounds identical to mine. I have managed to make it through prereqs with a 3.3 gpa, work full time, and I start in the nursing program this fall. My husband is however doing better. That being said, he still has relapses occasionally and they are usually horrible. I know you hear from a lot of people to get out and that's easy for some to say but not so easy when you are in the situation. No one can decide that but you. This will be a big stressor I'm sure but it can be done. I will do it!!!! Nar-anon is a great place for support. Addicts are sick and loving an addict and understanding is hard. I love my husband and I married him for better or for worse so I'm sticking it out and I pray for a miracle. Addiction changes a person and to those around them all that can be seen is self-centeredness. Sometimes these changes are cause for divorce but this is your decision. I chose nursing because my mother was a nurse and I needed something that could get me in the working world quickly as I had a small child. I fell in love with it so I guess it was fate. I was very satisfied as an LPN for 20 years but recently I began feeling as though I wasn't making a difference anymore. Nursing in my area has changed so I guess I'm changing with the times. If I need more education to make a difference then I am going for it! I look forward to my future growth in nursing! :-)

I get a lot of vibes just as you OP, only they come from my dad. When I got accepted into nursing school I of course called everyone to tell them. My mom, sisters, husband, children, and friends all said congratulations and they knew I could do it! My dad asked me who would pay for it and as I was telling him this in person, because he didn't even respond to my call or text on the subject, his body language said this as he was insinuating that I would be a failure left with the loans to repay and no success. I was devastated because I intend this time to take my nursing career as far as I can. Yes it did take me 20 years of working as an LPN to decide I want this but I have always been a person who is very motivated and when I say I'm doing something then I do it! If anyone knows this I would think my dad would know it. It did break my heart when I talked to him but I won't let it stand in the way of my dreams. In the area that I live there's criminal background checks on every job, even at a grocery store or the local dollar store. Those background checks show every charge and often if a misdemeanor shows up it's still enough to put a halt on the hiring process. My husband has looked now for years for a good job but charges from many years ago still haunt him. He is currently in school to become a drug and alcohol abuse counselor but, even when he gets out with good grades and an excellent school record, will he get a job or will this still haunt him? I'm hoping that his career choice makes a difference since it's related to his charges. He wants to help others who have been through what he has. I still worry that student loans will be due and no job to pay for them. I just hope his networking helps because it's not thus far. Thank God for farming work in our area and thank God he has experience in a trade of his own. With all of this said, nursing (or healthcare in general) is a far less forgiving profession. In a situation like yours OP then I guess seeking a lawyer to have these expunged, just as the others have said, is probably your best option. There's almost no such thing as a second chance in the world today with all if the computers that find almost everything. Pretty soon it will show up if you hit another kid in kindergarten and you will have to explain that at a job interview, if you even get the interview because of that. Lol! Nothing is hidden anymore. Everyone's skeletons are out of the closet now and no second chances for someone who done something silly when they were young. It's been taken to extremes because even the law looks at time. For example: the officers, lawyers, and judges no longer sees my husband as someone who breaks the law because it's been so many years since he has been into trouble and got those misdemeanors. These people talk with him at social functions and he is now respected as law abiding and as a friend to a lot of these people. Time should be a factor but unfortunately it's not. I absolutely love my MacBook Pro! I love all of my apple gadgets! I'm an apple nut!!! Lol! User friendly plus, if it's absolutely required, you can easily change pages documents to word documents. I use an app called audionote on my macbook to record class (where allowed) while taking notes that follow the recording. Very helpful and also available on my iphone and ipad. The recordings end up on my phone, ipad, and macbook so I can study anytime and anywhere. Same with pages or keynote. I used these back when I had A&P. My instructor allowed us to take photos of slides in the microscope so I took photos of them, labeled them through keynote, and had them on all my gadgets to study. In my class the instructor gave us lots of links to resources so I had little time to look any others up. This class probably took more time than any others I had taken. Very hard teacher! Many dropped the class after a couple weeks, most people get a C, and I ended up with a B working my butt off. I heard all the horror stories about this teacher and the class before I got there so I was already intimidated before I attended the first day. I did remember using The Microbial World and You. I also used quizzlet to study because I found some matching info on there. I used my books resources as well. McGraw-Hill had some good content (case studies) which helped me because these helped me look at the whole picture. My instructed also gave good case studies as well. I work as an LPN on the floor in LTC and do part time Tx/wound care nurse also. I love doing wound care because it's less stressful than being in charge of 30 residents. When I do wound care I have 60 residents and almost all of them have a cream, ointment, or wound. I also change g-tube dressings and listen to BS, assess abdomen, etc. I also do O2 assessments on residents wearing O2. Get sats, check LS, etc. I enjoy this job. It's much less stress and responsibility than floor nurse. It's like getting a break and it's 8 hours where floor work is 12 hours so it's helpful to have while going to school. Prereqs usually almost give you an associate in art or an associate in science degree. Some have that before entering a nursing program (I do. I have an AS). After prereqs it's up to you whether you want an ASN=2 more years or BSN=4 more years. However there are accelerated programs for persons with degrees in other areas just as was already stated. I have always had a terrible time with my hands, especially during the winter months. I love b&b works so while in a store one day about a year ago a lady working looked at my hands and asked if I was a nurse. When I told her I was she showed me the true blue spa line. I had seen it there many times before but had never used it. I always went for the good smelling "new" scents. Anyway, I tried it and was amazed how well it worked. I bought two different lotions and a foaming exfoliator. The one I liked for my hands was a super softening hand lotion with paraffin. It worked wonders. In LPN school I got to observe several things in the OR and done fine until one day I overslept, rushed to clinical site (still made it on time), but didn't eat breakfast. This morning I was to watch a tubal ligation. I stood observing the motion of the instruments which this morning appeared to me as torture more than a procedure! I began to feel more and more lightheaded. I started to excuse myself as the doctor looked at me and said "would you like to come closer and see?" I'm sure my face matched my uniform by this point. I can't remember what I said. The next memory I had was lying on the floor with nurses surrounding me as I desperately tried to apologize while they laughed. When I was in LPN school I drove a little over an hour one way to go to class 5 days a week. I'm now going back to the same school (community college) for my ASN and expect to also drive to the same town for my BSN. A larger university has opened a school for transfer students to get their BSN with them so I'll be driving this distance for several more years. It has never really bothered me. I have been in this situation myself and, although I hate to say it, it often times is with a lazy nurse. She drags out report because she don't "officially" begin until after report. I have many times stayed over for this and then have a pt fall (which was my responsibility since she hadn't gotten report) causing me to stay over longer. Then after giving this lengthy report with every little detail, which she of course writes down and has right in front of her, a phone call comes in from a family member or doctor I had left a message for. At this time (while I'm documenting the incident from fall trying desperately to finish and leave because I gotta be back the next morning) the other nurse says on the phone "I'm sorry, I just got here, let me have you speak with the nurse that was here and left the message. Sometimes this action makes me wonder what they do when families call after I'm gone. Sometimes I'm surprised that I don't get calls from families at home or I wonder if they tell them to call back tomorrow. I don't know if this is the case in the op. It could be a number of things but the above is my experience. Sometimes I just deal with it and go on because I know it will be done if I do it. With the phone calls I will often say look at your notes and you can tell them what the call was for because you just wrote it down and if you need to you can also refer to the chart because it's in there too!
